An interview with Lyall Lupin

What is your real, birth name? What name do you use? Lyall Lloyd Lupin... don’t know what my parents were thinking really. I never use Lloyd, it’s just Lyall Lupin.

Do you have a nickname? What is it, and where did you get it? Mostly people just call me Ly... I think that’s pretty self explanatory, right? What do you look like? What kinda weird question is this, you’re looking right at me aren’t you? What? The way I see myself? Uh. I’m pretty tall, I think lanky is the word I’m looking for. My hair looks like it was once blonde and I forgot to wash it. Come to think of it, I haven’t washed it in a while. It’s long but not long enough yet. My eyes are blue. I’ve got a bit of facial hair now. Not much though. How do you dress most of the time? Well, most of the time I have to wear my school robes. They are rather boring. The professors make me wear shoes, which is annoying. But, they are long enough and cover up enough that I don’t have to wear underpants, so I guess it’s a fair trade off. How do you "dress up?" Depends on the occasion, doesn’t it? I’ve got a suit floating about somewhere, not all that fond of wearing it though, very restrictive. I like dressing up in nice skirts, pretty silk ones are my favourite, but they are ridiculously expensive. I have a very nice fur coat for when it’s cold. If I’m dressing up I like doing my make up too, I’ve gotten pretty good at it too. Jewellery too, I really like to pile my jewellery on. I like the way it sparkles and clinks together. And always a flower crown, can’t go out without one of those. How do you "dress down?" When I have nowhere to be I will wear precisely nothing. Old pairs of trousers, or loose skirts. Tshirts or vests or jumpers if it gets cold. If I’m not trying to look good I probably look rather terrible. What do you wear when you go to sleep? I hate to sound like a scratched record, but once again, precisely nothing. Pajamas ride up all over the place and are so incredibly uncomfortable. I can’t sleep if I am wearing anything. In your opinion, what is your best feature? I really don’t know. Ask Xaldin or someone. Oh, my opinion? I don’t know. I guess I rather like my smile. What's your real birth date? June 10, ‘26 Where do you live? Describe it: I guess I live in two places, d’ya wanna hear about them both? Okay my room at school is always a bit of a mess. My beds four poster, I’m not sure if I’m allowed to but I’ve been practicing my stitching all over my curtains, so they are decorated with all sorts of fabric scraps and funny looking flowers. All the walls ‘round my bed are covered in photographs I’ve taken. I’m greedy and always keep my favourites. I’ve got a few jugs of flowers by my bed but I don’t change ‘em as much as I should. My other house is the farm. The farm is big, it’s a dairy farm, so lots of cows and cow sheds and stuff. The house is small and it really needs fixing up. The roof of my bedroom was leaking last time I went home but I patched it up. My bedroom at home is also covered in lots of photos, I’m actually running out of room on the walls their. Round the skirting it all these pictures me and my sister used to draw. Oh and mam would always measure my height on my bedroom door... even now she makes me do it every summer I’m home. Do you own a car? Describe it. No I don’t have a car. I’ve got a motorcycle though. I’m not sure if I own it technically. It’s my dads. But it was all rusting in the shed when I found it two years ago. He hadn’t rode it since Finch was born. So I think it’s mine. It’s a Triumph 6/1. I’m not sure what the 6/1 means. It rides like an absolute beast. I love it. What is your most prized possession? Why do you value it so much? My cameras. Don’t even ask me to choose a favourite between ‘em all. I love being able to capture all these memories and moments on film. It’s really exciting. My camera feel like an extension of myself, half the time things only look normal through a lens for me. I get to know people so much better when I photograph them. You see a different side to people.

What one word best describes you? I dunno... Lyall, I guess. My name just about sums me up I think. What is your family like? My family are really brilliant. We all get along just great, they are funny and creative and accepting. They accepted my differences when they found out I’m a wizard. Wasn’t even too shocked. They are work far too hard. ‘Specially mam. She works on the farm all day, and raises the kids and runs the house all on her own. I miss them a lot. Who is your father, and what is he like? Conall Lupin. He’s a bit wild. Travelled ‘round a lot and finally settled down in Wales when he met mam. Always doing weird things like pulling coins out from our ears, said it was magic, if you’d believe it! Never really took to farm life I don’t think. He’s in the war now. Probably getting a kick out of the excitement if you ask me. I worry though, in almost every letter mam sends she tells me about another neighbour dying or going missing. I hope it doesn’t happen to him. Who is your mother, and what is she like? Nerys Broderick. She grew up on this farm, took it over when she married dad. She’s the best cook in the world I think. She’s gentle but... she means business. All the time. When mam says do something it gets done. Even dad’d listen to her when she gets serious. I’m not too sure if she ever sleeps, she is always so busy. Never stops smiling though, even when she is mad as all hell she will still find a reason to smile and laugh. What is your parents marriage like? They’d row like cats and dogs at least once a week. Dad’d smash plates and storm off in a huff. Mam’d laugh, then follow him, then they’d come back holding hands and laughing, usually with bits of hay stuck in their hair. I never really got that, maybe they went out to the barn and had a hay fight until they made up. They love each other though, despite the rows and how different they are. It is quite lovely. Mam worries herself sick about dad though she will never admit it. What are your siblings names? What are they like? Rhian is the oldest. She’s 18 and I’m rather fond of her. We always got along really well growing up. Now she sends me Vogue magazines, and I send her Witch Weekly. It’s a good trade if you ask me. Aidan and Imogen are twins. They are 11 now. Immy cried when she didn’t get a Hogwarts letter, and laughed at Aidan for not getting one too. She bullies him a fair bit, but will have a fit if any of us so much as tease him. She takes great pride in being the older twin. Aidan is much quieter than her, maybe the quietest of our whole family, he reads a lot. Finch is the baby, well not anymore I guess, he’s six now. Really enjoys being out of the farm, he is already milking cows even though he can barely reach the udders. I think everyone is keeping a close eye on him, I was about his age when I started showing signs of my magic. I kinda hope he does follow in my footsteps, it’d be real nice to be able to share this with someone in my family. How old were you when you went on your first date? Well this is a bit embarrassing, but I’ve never actually been on a date. I might be the only one in my year who hasn’t. Wanna know something funny? I was supposed to go on a date last weekend, but obviously couldn’t do that. We will try again though, so I will be sixteen when I go on my first date. What annoys you more than anything else? More than anything? Gosh. Probably people who always correct my grammar. All the time. It’s so silly, if people can understand what I’m saying, what does it matter how the words come out? What would be the perfect gift for you? Unlimited reels of film. Colour film. A video camera. A boat or a plane to travel the world. All that would be perfect. What's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen? Thing, not person? Are you sure I can’t choose a person? Okay. Backstage. It’s beautiful, always. And that’s all I can say. What time of day is your favorite? The hour leading up to sunrise, and sunrise itself. The sky looks beautiful and all the colours are just right. The air is always so still, it’s the only time I really feel calm. What kind of weather is your favorite? I love storms. Lots of thunder and lightning. I used to always run outside in thunder storms and jump in the puddles and try take photographs of the lightning. What is your favorite food? What is your least favorite food? Figs, fresh figs. They are juicy and sweet and the seeds feel like they are popping when you bite into them. It’s incredible. I also really love cheese. Like, a lot. D’ya know what is really good, figs and goats cheese. But you’ve gotta drizzle it in honey too. Honest! Least favourite. I don’t much like potatoes, unless they are roasted. They just taste so bland. And porridge, oh I hate porridge, it’s like eating flavourless mud. What's the worst thing that can be done to another person? Why? Definitely killing them. What could be worse than that? Or maybe killing someone they love, right in front of them. Death is so final, once you are dead you can’t live anymore, y’know? And since life is the best thing, death must be the worst.

What's the worst thing you could actually do to someone you hated? Me, personally? I’m not sure if I have ever hated someone. I dunno. I don’t like this question, do I have to answer it? Uh. I ‘spose I could poison someone, not enough to kill them! Just to make them a bit sick. Maybe? I dunno. I don’t like thinking about this.

Is it okay for you to cry? When was the last time you cried? Yeah, ‘course. Sometimes you just gotta cry. Last time I cried? Not long ago actually. I’m not saying why. It’s personal. What do you do when you are bored? Develop photographs. I take ‘em faster than I can develop ‘em so I always have rolls and rolls waiting to be developed. It’s a good way to spend a few hours and I always entertain myself looking back over the pictures. It’s funny how much stuff I forget until I am looking right at it again. Or sometimes I like to put on make up, just try out new stuff, make myself look pretty. It’s good to practice as much as I can. Then sometimes I take photographs of it. Then go develop them.

Professor Tiberius Ogden

Although many people may consider Professor Ogden the type to hide in the shadows until the stars come out, he is actually one of the more exuberant teachers at Hogwarts. Preferring to bid his time before classes designing crafts to hang in his office or drinking more firewhiskey than he should on the weekends, there are many students who find Tiberius Ogden to be the strangest of their teachers.

Excellent at what he does, Professor Ogden has almost every single constellation memorized and the location of every galaxy, and he begins every class with a question on the brightest star in the sky that night. Every night it is different, and the student that answers correctly gets twenty five house points. Often though, to his dismay, very few people can tell him the star that he is asking about, and even fewer can give him the answer to his initial question.

No matter how many times he attempts to get them to understand, he finds that often his excitement about the night sky can get in the way of his teaching abilities so that those who understand it are generally the people who are interested in it because they actually ask questions. Others stay in the background and do very little and as such tend to get poorer grades in his class.

As well as teaching astronomy, Professor Ogden also runs Astronomy club which meets once a month when the North Star gets especially bright, although run might be a strong word as often times he sits at his telescope studying his favorite constellations while the students in the club discuss the ones they can see.

Professor Tierney Boyle

A muggleborn wizard himself with three muggle sisters, it is no doubt Tierney Boyle is the best person for the job of muggle studies professor. More than willing to teach any student that comes to his class, Professor Boyle goes about his teaching ignoring the backhanded and whispered comments about his blood status.

While many people agree that having a muggle born teach muggle studies would be the most beneficial, there are still complaints from some parents that do not wish to have a 'mudblood' teaching their children and so as it is, he has a very small class size. As a result many, if not all, of his students are muggleborns themselves, and he finds that he is very comfortable with teaching them because they understand much of muggle culture already, although he will readily accept any student into his class with the same friendly smile.

Professor Boyle teaches with a very group friendly approach, choosing to have open discussions about muggle culture and situations instead of lecturing his students. Instead of having the desks in rows, at the beginning of each class, the group circles up and begins the discussion with a quote from a muggle author and they then expand on that into the lesson for the day.

Not one to give much homework, all work that needs to be done for the class is done in class in a more grouped way so as to make things easier. Students work in pairs or small groups to create essay like answers discussing the day's lesson in the last ten minutes of class, and so long as these are completed in a thorough way, Tierney Boyle is more than happy to continue teach the way he sees fit.

Professor Cuthbert Binns

Clueless as always, Professor Binns is a running joke in many circles of students. There are many people who laugh about the fact that he would likely not even notice if someone set his room on fire, which could very well be true. So many people are assured that nothing could stop him from teaching his dreadfully boring subject, in fact, many people have tried.

It has become a competition between houses to see who can get him to look up from his book or the blackboard first every class, and sometimes the bets are not even won. True, Professor Binns will give lectures on the punishments that will come to those who do not hand in essays, but never acts upon any of the things he says to the point where no one even listens to what he says anymore, which annoys him to no end. At least for a few minutes it annoys him, but then he's back into the same routine of teaching his subject straight out of the book.

There are very few things he does aside from teach and almost all of those few things he does involve reading in some way, whether it's reading novels from the library or reading his own History of Magic book over and over. Then again, he does have more of an expansive knowledge than anyone about the castle and its history from having done a number of different research excursions on the subject.

Professor Albus Dumbledore

Love him or hate him, Professor Albus Dumbledore is one or the other to most students at the school. While there are many students who consider him to be one of the best, most worthwhile professors, there are an almost equal amount who find him to be far too difficult a grader. Late homework is met with a stern glance and a short lecture on how important it is to always do one's best, but he means well and many students see that; others do not.

Always one to think that magic should be completely hands on, no lesson taught by Professor Dumbledore is merely a lecture. No matter what the students are doing, they actually have to do it, or at least attempt the spell. While he understands that some students struggle with some magic where others prevail, no class is finished until everyone has at least attempted to cast the spell and has made something happen, successful or not.

Outside of his Transfiguration classroom, Albus Dumbledore is always willing to talk to the students, school related or not. A student could come to him for homework help, dessert advice, or even a game of exploding snap and more often than not, he is always willing to oblige to the best of his abilities.

Just as protective of the students as the headmaster, Professor Dumbledore is typically a very logical person when it comes to punishments for rule breaking, preferring to get to the core of a situation before doling out punishments that he deems unnecessary. In his opinion, any punishment should be constructive which is why often students that get detentions from him are seen doing lines, extra essays, or tutoring younger students. He does not often have house points taken away for bad behavior as he sees that as a punishment to the house instead of the individual.

Professor Griselda Marchbanks

One of the more calming teachers, Griselda Marchbanks is a favorite to many students at Hogwarts. Always willing to answer questions about lessons after class, Professor Marchbanks' number one goal is to make sure that every student understands a lesson thoroughly, even if it meant an extra hour or two of one on one work and explaining.

Professor Marchbanks does not tolerate late assignments and those caught missing deadlines are given detentions that are more for studying purposes and finishing assignments not handed in on time. She does not do it to be mean or cruel, only to make sure that her students are getting the most out of her class. She feels as though if half of her class can pass their charms O.W.L. with an E or better, then she is doing a good job teaching.

Professor Marchbanks also happens to be very involved in extracurricular activities, leading both the art club and the knitting club, finding both of them to be very relaxing to her as she loves to see what her students come up with.

More like a counselor than a teacher, she tends to get into lengthy conversations with students about their families and their problems aside from school. When students do not want to talk to their friends about an issue, they know that her door is always open and she is always ready to accept any student with open arms and a fresh pot of tea into her office when they need to talk.

Headmaster Armando Dippet

Headmaster Dippet is one of the few professors at Hogwarts who will not tolerate any fooling around. There may be strict teachers, taking off house points when rules are broken, but Professor Dippet does not even waste the time, jumping straight to detention if he catches any student doing something they're not supposed to be doing. Walking the halls like a king in his domain, Armando Dippet demands a respect that is given by even the most unruly students who will step aside to let him pass through the dense crowds of students that flood the corridors between classes.

Despite his strict, no nonsense ways, Armando Dippet can be one of the warmest teacher if he is in a good mood, which often he is. Always there to listen to students when they need it, he is the one who can give perfect recommendations on what a student should pursue after Hogwarts, or which classes they should drop if they are doing the student no good.

One of the oldest headmasters ever to be at Hogwarts, wisdom does not elude Professor Dippet, and he's only too happy to pass it onto the student that ask for it. Quiet and reserved, Armando is almost never in his office during the afternoons as he tends to walk the halls, admiring everything as he had the first time he stepped foot in the large school.

From the moment he turned 11 and took his first look at Hogwarts, the wizard knew he would be spending the rest of his life working for the school even if it took him forever to get the job. He spent his years at school learning what he would need to do in order to be the headmaster, taking classes that kept him up late at night finishing homework although to him it was all worth it because it meant a career at Hogwarts, one that he's had for 153 years and counting.

Fiercely protective of all the students at his school, anything that becomes a threat is almost immediately found and eradicated so as to make sure nothing happens to Hogwarts which has been his home since his first day.
