Jimin’s heart beat wildly in his chest as he abandoned the potatoes he had been preparing, his phone tossed aside as he leapt to his feet. Peeking his head around the kitchen doorway, his eyes fell to the light shining out from the bottom of the bathroom door.
His steps were cautious, his hands itching desperately to pull Jungkook into his arms.
Knocking softly, he called out a gentle ‘Kook?’, before nudging the door open.
His eyes immediately fell to Jungkook, who was huddled in the corner, his arms wrapped around his knees. Jimin’s eyes raked over his tear-stained cheeks, his face blotchy and eyes red.
He was across the room before Jimin had even realized he was moving, dropping to his knees in front of Jungkook, his hands reaching out to cup his chin gently. “Talk to me, baby. What’s wrong?”
Jungkook lifted his gaze, his eyes swirling with too many emotions. Fear, hurt, sadness, longing.
His breath hitched a little, his hand shaking as it reached up to settle over Jimin’s. “I love you,” he managed to say, his voice a little hoarse.
Jimin leaned in so their foreheads were pressed together, thumbing away at the tears on Jungkook’s cheeks. “I love you too, Kookie.”
Jungkook’s hands gripped a little tighter onto Jimin’s. “It’s not‒ But I‒ 'm so‒”
“Slow down,” he whispered gently to Jungkook. “I’m right here.”
Jungkook’s eyes slipped closed for a moment, breathing in a choked breath. “I love you so much,” his eyes opened again, locking on Jimin’s.
“And sometimes it scares the shit out of me. I just‒ You can walk away, you can turn your back on me anytime you want and just the thought of that happening makes me terrified. I can’t see anything after you. If you leave there’s nothing after that.”
Jimin’s heart twisted a little in his chest, as he watched Jungkook grip his hand tightly.
“At some point, you became essential to my life, you became woven into my future until all my future was, all my future is, is you. And that scares the shit out of me.”
The older wanted to pull Jungkook into his arms, to fight the anguish that was filling Jungkook’s eyes and chase away his demons but he could only sit and listen as Jungkook continued.
“I lay awake at two in the morning scared out of my mind, because at some point my happiness became directly linked to you. Because I don’t want to live in a world without you.”
“You can leave whenever you want, you can just get up and go and there’s nothing I will be able to do about it, and my heart gets stuck in my throat every time I think about it.”
“I want you forever, and I know you tell me the same, but every day I get scared that one day you’ll change your mind.”
Jimin glanced down at their intertwined fingers, a single thought filling his head, drowning out the storm swirling through his mind.
“It doesn’t have to be today, it doesn’t have to be tomorrow, hell it doesn’t even have to be this year. I want you for as long as you’re going to let me, and if that’s forever, then I want you forever. I want you till the end of time.”
“I’m not going to change my mind. I want this, I want you. Until the end. Until we’re two old bastards who can barely move anymore, who’ve spent their lives together and are still so very in love.”
“Marry me.” It wasn’t a question. It was simply I want you. Marry me. Be mine. And there was no way that Jungkook would have said no anyway. Jimin was his, and he was Jimin’s. It didn’t matter that they were huddled on a bathroom floor, or that no ring sat on Jungkook’s finger.
They simply held each other, because that was enough. They had each other, and that’s all they ever needed.
