With a victim count of 38+, Moses Sithole is South Africa’s most prolific serial killer to date. Nicknamed the “ABC Killer” due to his murders beginning in Atteridgeville, then moving on to Boksburg and finishing in Cleveland, he had a turbulent childhood. His father died when he was just 5-years-old and he was placed in an orphanage because his mother abandoned the family; he was reportedly abused in the orphanage and ran away. His life of crime began during his early twenties when he took to raping women. One victim testified against him and he was sentenced to prison for four years where he was raped by the other inmates, fuelling his rage against the world. Shortly after his release in 1994, Sithole took his first murder victim. Managing a charity for the support of child abuse victims, Sithole enticed his victims and readily led them to their brutal deaths. Often under the pretence of offering them a role in his charity, Sithole lured women to remote fields where he would then beat, rape, and murder them. The majority of his victims were strangled to death with their own underwear; he would also write crude words over their body before disposing of them. Over the course of one just one year, Sithole killed at least 38 people, with one being the 2-year-old son of another victim. Disturbingly, Sithole also took much delight in calling and taunting the family members of his victims. He was finally apprehended in August 1995 when he was witnessed luring a victim away - her body was soon discovered and Sithole was tracked down. When authorities came to arrest Sithole, he ran at them with an axe; authorities responded by shooing him twice and wounding him. Sithole confessed to the murders and was sentenced to 50 years for each 38 murders, 12 years for each 40 rapes and five years for each six robberies. With his sentences running consecutively, he received a total of 2,410 years. Once incarcerated, it was discovered that Sithole was HIV positive with his wife and son both dying of the disease.
