can i just say how much i love that the culprit in your ganaka ward story is just…regular, unremarkable, run of the mill overwork?
in the book we get the story of corporate sabotage, of corporation rim goons in business suits making the call that untold slaughter and death was an acceptable price to pay for a few extra minutes to sell product, and it’s horrific. it’s ghastly and evil and monstrous but also, it’s kind of a let down? not from the human reader’s perspective, from our world, because something so blatantly murderous would be over the line even for most of our corporations, but in mb’s world this is. normal. everyday. business as usual. totally not weird for half a hundred people to die bloody painful deaths because someone wanted to be at the front of the line on market day.
and that banality is reflected in your au, because. that does happen every day. everywhere. innocent struggling kids are institutionalized and neglected every day, and nurses and medics and support staff are forced to work untenable hours every day and they have all their empathy and compassion sucked out of them by the grind until the don’t see patients they just see animals every day and when the sleep deprivation takes its toll those same nurses are blamed by the corporations that forced them into that situation to save a few bucks every day. people suffer and die unremarkable deaths every day so the for-profit healthcare system can keep chugging away. it’s just such a good metaphor because you’ve got the horror and the mystery and the wracking guilt, but also the crushing mundanity of it all, because this is just How Things Are. this is the system working exactly as intended, just like in the book, so a couple of people can make a few more dollars, just like in the book. just. well done, man. seriously fantastic work
hi this ask made me scream and writhe on the ground in agony. thank u so much, i was really hoping that parallel would come through in the finished comic :’)
i’m always saying that the Spirit of canon is more important for aus than a 1:1 translation of events, which is what i want to show with the human!au, and part of what took me so long w ganaka ward was just. figuring out what the hell fit in a thematic sense. rereading and rotating and microwaving canon events to try and distill The Essence Of It All.
(luckily the essence turned out to be extremely analogous to events i have personally experienced, so i got some catharsis out of it too hehe)
i’m so glad that people think i pulled it off well, i can’t overstate how much i second-guessed myself while writing LMAO. genuinely thought people were gonna throw bricks at my head about it. that’s fandom trauma for u
thankfully this community is genuinely one of the kindest and most interactive fandoms ive ever been in, so i really didn’t have shit to worry about! the response to my art in general and ganaka ward in specific has blown me tf away, thank u anon & everyone who has responded for being so sweetie peas 💖💖💖💖
