My first time ever seeing a live Luna Moth in person! Truly magnificent!
More Highlights from my Cape Cod National Seashore Research 7.26-27.14
The Paonias excaecata was found on the way out of the cape at a tedeschis!
For National Moth Week, I will be posting photos of moths everyday! Since I missed yesterday (I was mothing!), here's two!
Picture 1: Citheronia regalis
Picture 2: Hemaris thysbe
(Photos are my own)
Contest again!
So, Saturday is the kickoff of National Moth week! This contest is totally different, there will be 2 winners again. The way this contest will work is again by reblogs! You get one entry by reblogging the Boston Nature Center NMW flyer I have on my blog (preferably the last post of it, it is on my blog). You can win additional entries by sending me asks of cool moths you've seen. I'll happily ID them for you as well! When you send you moth, just include your location and approximate date you've seen this moth. I will be using the data to help compile flight charts. If you have any issue with having the data used (not the photograph) please say so. So reblogs of the NMW is one entry, an ask is 1 entry too! (Bonus points if you're running a NMW event!) Pretty simple right? Your prizes: 1st place: A specimen from the tropics! (Likely a butterfly) And 2 handmade greeting card. 2nd place: Two handmade greeting cards. The contest will end Saturday at 23:59EST! Winners will be announced whenever I wake up from a night of mothing on Sunday (by 13:00). It's almost National Moth Week!
ContestOk guys! So, I'm a moth obsessed person... I study them, can't help it. I'm going to do something cool in honor of National Moth Week coming up this month! These three photos are all related to my research in some way.
If you can name any of these species, send me an fan mail/ask with the correct ID of all or one of the specimens; I know what they all are, but we're gonna play a game! These photos are from Wellfleet, MA.
I'll put hints on the photos themselves. Click the image to see the hint.
Each correct ID earns one entry. Each reblog of this post or of my NMW event post counts as one entry as well. So, to reiterate, naming all three of these species is an automatic 3 entries. Entries into what you might ask?! Well... I do collect insects, and raise them. Which means, I have a LOT of dead moths I can give away. I'll be doing regular moth contests over the next few weeks, and every 2-3 days I'll pick a winner, and contact them so they can win a dead specimen. If you ask nicely, I'll even pin it for you :D
This contest (ending 7/11/14 at 17:00EST) you get an Acherontia atropos specimen.
Also, after the contest ends, I'll repost the photos with what they are and how they're connected to my research.
Hey guys! So, National Moth Week is coming up, and if you're not doing anything, register an event! If you don't want to register an event, consider coming to this one... I will be running a series of workshops June 19th (the start of NMW)! See the above pictures. The first workshop is geared toward kids, the second adults, and the third, all ages. This will take place in Boston, MA at the Boston Nature Center.
Also, please reblog this! The Boston Nature Center needs a lot more visitors and this event was awesome last year!
