Hi, I noticed that you recently reblogged some art that whitewashed Visser 1 & it isn't the first time that it has happened. The characters of color in the series (Marco, Ax, Visser 1, etc) all provide much needed diversity. As such a big blog in the fandom, it would mean a lot to me & other fans of color if you wouldn't promote art that erases their identities. 1. of all: Thanks for not hiding behind a grey-face and approaching me about this in a nice and mature way. I had another message about the same thing and their tone was rather condescending, which immediatelly put me in a very defensive mindset, so I decided to just answer yours instead.
2. I think this is the fanart in question, right? You are absolutely right about Visser 1. Her skin tone is the same as David’s, so it’s clearly whitewashed and I shouldn’t have reblogged it. I deleted the post already.
3. I’m aware what whitewashing is and please don’t think I support it. Until today I actually thought I was doing pretty well with avoiding reblogs of whitewashed content. Your message made me rethink that (and the other one did too) and I went through my Marco and Ax tags and deleted a handful of stuff.
4. However, I ask you to understand that I run this blog pretty routinely and I’m a flawed human being, so mistakes occur. Usually I go into the Animorphs tag, scan it for posts I like and then I quickly add a tag or two (sometimes I do ramble in the tags but not that much) and then I don’t give it much thought anymore.
5. As for fanart, there isn’t that much content to begin with and I guess my wish to support as many Animorphs artists as possible is just much more present than the little voice in the back of my mind that says “Girl, you gotta look out for the whitewashing too”. Long story short: Sometimes the whitewashing just doesn’t register with me. Concerning the fanart in question I just thought “Wow, somebody made an effort to put all the enemies in one fanart, including some of the rarer alien species. That’s pretty impressive. I wanna support that person.” So I simply overlooked the fact that Visser 1 was way too white.
6. Like I said I’m a flawed human being, but I do not want to support whitewashing, so if you guys notice me reblogging content which contains it, I encourage you to make me aware of it. BUT PLEASE don’t be rude about it. A quick note like “yo, you reblogged whitewashed art, please delete it” will do.
