okay so scp (current wip) is gonna be kinda self indulgent and chooses to assume that more distinct human cultures and religions persisted as living practices beyond the start of (human participation in) interstellar expansion because i enjoy writing from optimistic premises, however!! i am once again lying awake thinking about that one line in The Nexus when Julian says, “no one says [l’chaim] anymore,” because it fucks me up so bad it’s unreal like,, they really just cut right to the heart of it huh
there is so much Good within the Federation, genuinely- so much curiosity and wonder and love for life and willingness to engage with new cultures, new species. but there is also this correlation, i think, between reaching a certain degree of global standardization (historically accomplished via imperialism and it’s aftereffects) and achieving warp / interplanetary colonization. despite artifacts and elements of unique cultures persisting, there is a broadly defined understanding conveyed to and perpetuated by other species about the Way Humans Are- a standard of human culture, just like there’s a Vulcan culture/language, a Klingon culture/language, etc.
and i’m not nearly smart or learned enough to properly analyze all the mechanics of this or even be sure that i’m not just grasping at straws here, because yeah maybe i am, idk. i’m supposed to be sleeping rn. but whatever the details work out to, i can’t stop coming back to the heartbreaking simplicity of “nobody says it anymore.” especially coming from Julian, who has always been so devoted to Federation ideals/values despite (or perhaps as a result of) his incredibly complicated relationship with the imperfect reality of the Federation. alright gonna pass out now but thank you for coming to my tedtalk
