Original November 1975 caption: “Eel Capitol of America. A worker processes eels in one of the eel processing plants that George Robberacht, an immigrant from the Netherlands, founded in the Mount Holly, Virginia area. The now multi-million dollar business processes two million pounds of eels a year - mostly for export to Europe.”
“Changes had rendered the once pristine example of roadside hospitality nearly a wasteland. Only a shadow of its former self, the once proud symbol of Howard Johnson's Motor Lodges, the Gate Lodge, sat empty awaiting its sad fate even as a bit of its once gleaming Orange Roof bled through...”
The original Mount Holly, New Jersey Howard Johnson office building was razed in 2018, after being used as a travel agency for many years. Red Roof Inn has since taken over the motel portion, which is still in use.
