Mount Pierce - New Hampshire’s White Mountains
September 23rd, 2017
Me on Mount Pierce (4,311 feet) this weekend. It was so foggy that you couldn’t see a thing - it made this edge of the trail look like the end of the world.
I Didnt Think I Liked The Mountains This Much
People use to ask me if I liked hiking in October I always responded to how much I avoid exercise and how much I hated being healthy due to we all are going to die one day might as well be comfortable. After months of watching and hearing about different hikes that everyone had such a fun time and what they endured I tried my first hike on January 20th. I took my time doing a 'me' day hiking up Mount Tom. Just barely over 4000 feet; however I am out of shape it is a steep hike from the get-go, and turns out I was breaking-trail. But after dying once, and almost turning around twice; I finally made it to the sign that said, "Mount Tom Spur .6 miles" which made me like a little kid getting given some chocolate. So much energy and enthusiasm. I took an hour at the top just to myself looking below me, sitting and eating grapes and drinking a frappachino. I watched the Jay birds for a few minutes then I made the steep trek back down. Even the next day I was craving for another hike. I can't explain how this dramatic change of not wanting to hike or exercise to someone who wants to hike mountains on a daily basis came from; maybe because I dont fully understand it myself yet. However, 10 days later, I was on top of Mount Pierce. Graduallly steep for the first 2 miles but after that it was like a walk in the woods. Such a pretty view and it was exhilarating to be in the Alpine Zone for the first time. It was like 7.5 miles round trip taking the crawford path to the summit of Pierce then I went down to the Mizpah Hut, even though it was closed I wanted to see it. It was amazing to just take time for myself and do something such as hiking another 4000-footer. Music and my own thoughts. It was such a clear day on top I had the chance to see ground below me without clouds in the way or fog. This hike has inspired me to go longer next time. I didn't know I loved these mountains so much and now I'm going to make so many adventures I'll have stories of my own of my hikes and what I've endured.

Mizpah Hut. Crawford Notch, New Hampshire. 5/13/2013 Mizpah means "pillar in the wilderness," an apt name for this hut nestled on the southern flank of Mt. Pierce. The hut overlooks Montalban Range, the Dry River Wilderness, and Crawford Notch, and features large, south-facing windows, varied-size bunkrooms, and a separate library and game room.
