A Sage PSA
I was in a local art and spirituality shop that specializes in local artists, and while buying herbs from them I noticed a sign explaining that they do not deal in white sage because of how it is often unethically harvested.
I had no idea about this and went home and looked it up, and it turns out that while white sage is not endangered, it IS very often harvested unethically with disrespect to Native American lands, and some Native American conservationists from tribes in the southwest are concerned about the future of white sage because of illegal harvesting and overharvesting. People have even been known to steal white sage from preserves and reservation land in highly disrespectful acts.
Because of this, I am choosing not to use white sage but instead mountain sage, as part of my spells and rituals. While I'd like to be able to use white sage some time, I would prefer to purchase seeds or a live plant and cultivate it myself for personal use rather than risk purchasing from an unethical distributor.
The bundle in the picture above is mountain sage and cedar that my boyfriend purchased from a Native American seller with their blessing. While I do not make any claim to Native American practices or to smudging, it's important to me to acknowledge and respect the sacred importance of sage cleansing used by many Native American cultures, and to recognize that those of us in neopaganism owe the practice to ancient Native American culture and should be mindful of it.
I'm sure many people know about this already, but if you're new to the craft and rituals like I am and are busy researching and learning, this was really important to me to know!
