Friday Skeggs with Janet. No Matt, we're fresh out of Matts • 6/1/18
Matt A has a new job that won’t let him ride on Fridays, and Matt C has moved to Nipomo. We’ve tried coming up with another Matt, as a Friday at Skeggs just doesn’t feel right without one, but to no avail. Sigh. So we must soldier on, and ride anyway.
The ride, however matt-lesss it was, was great! What a difference a week makes: Last week it was raining up here, and too cold/muddy to do much of a ride. This week we have sun filtering through the redwoods, and hero dirt! I had my fenders on, but really didn’t need them as there were few puddles left. There was a big, beautiful Madrone tree down on Manzanita Trail, which required some scrambling to clear, but otherwise the trails were in fine shape. There were a bunch of Douglass Irises around, and I got one nice picture of one of those.
Towards the end of the ride as we were heading back up and out on Gordon Mill Trail, Janet squealed and swerved in an attempt to avoid a lizard. Which she did, so we thought, as we saw the lizard scramble off the trail and disappear into the leaves by the side. I've known that lizards can drop their tails as a distraction for predators, but I'd never seen one immediately after separating from the lizard. The gyrations this one went through, and for how long, was just mesmerizing! I only got 7 seconds of video, but this movement can go on for a long time! I'm sure this is a great survival adaptation:

After Janet headed home, I did another short out and back along the top to burn off the last of my energy. Great day out under the redwoods!
