{ neighbourhood - Mount Edgcumbe } The Folly at Mount Edgcumbe estate was built circa 1747, as a playground for Edgcumbe’s kids. It was built from medieval stone taken from the ruined churches of St George and St Lawrence, at Stonehouse. The scene from the folly and the hill is stunning. It faces Drakes Island, Plymouth Sound and Plymouth city itself. { neighbourhood - Mount Edgcumbe } The Mount Egdcumbe Country Park is on the Rame Peninsula, overlooking Plymouth Sound and the River Tamar and its main entrance is in the village of Cremyll. The park has been famous since the 18th century, when the Edgcumbe family created formal gardens, temples, follies and woodlands around the Tudor house. The house itself was the principal seat of the Edgcumbe family since Tudor times, many of whom served as MP before Richard Edgcumbe was raised to the peerage as Baron Edgcumbe in 1742. His 2nd son, George, was advanced to the rank of Earl in 1789. Mount Edgcumbe I took my friend Julia to Mount Edgcumbe for the day. We luckily had the perfect weather! It cost £1.50 to get the Cremyll Ferry across which was a lovely ride as the weather was so good. At the grounds we had a lovely picnic and sat in the sun for a while. We walked through the grounds and up to the manor house. We couldnt go in as there was a wedding so instead we went to the cafe Stables and had a cream tea. Julia had never had one before so wanted to tick off something on the Cornish list! The cream tea was fantastic, I maybe would have liked a little more jam but was still delicious! We both had a fantastic day out here and enjoyed the walks around the grounds.
