Tip #140: HAVE YOUR CHARACTER LOOK OFF FRAME. When the director calls “action,” that doesn’t necessarily mean the actor will do something big like riding a horse or diving off a cliff. Memorable acting often involves extremely subtle gestures. A classic example is when the subject of the shot looks off frame. This gesture draws in the audience, making them want to see what the character sees. Unlike delivering dialogue or performing an acrobatic trick, eye acting is something that novice actors can handle to great effect.
