Moving Brands; reflection
We were both happy with our two bumpers for the V&A, the use of a strong colour palette as well as the same imagery helped us to really connect both of our bumpers to make them feel cohesive, we created bright and fresh animations that felt interesting and I think we worked well to represent the variety of the different art forms the V&A displays.
I think if we had worked together on the actual animation section of this project we could have been more successful as I think it would have been beneficial to have someone else’s input and we could have shared / learnt new techniques. However I think because the same visuals were shown throughout both, we still managed to make them feel cohesive.
Also I think maybe some more research could have helped us in terms of the actual animation, we looked at research predominantly for the visual side of the examples rather than focusing on the movement & the style of animation. This could’ve inspired some more adventurous animations however I think focusing on simpler animations was appropriate as our bumpers were very image driven - we didn’t want to take the focus away from the textures.
Animation // Natasha MOVING BRANDS
This is the other animation we created for our moving brands project. While I took the route of showing new contemporary exhibitions at the V&A, Natasha took the route of showing off their main exhibitions and what they have to other. We continued the theme of LIBERALITY. Natasha did a really good job on her half and with the idea of using more comedic sound effects she did a good job on her half making it sound comic. Believe that the two work well as separate pieces of work while still having a overall theme.
LIBERALITY - Theme for Moving Brands
When we were researching into V&A Natasha came along the quote from Queen Victoria when re-changing the name of the exhibition.
"I trust that it will remain for ages a Monument of discerning Liberality and a Source of Refinement and Progress."
This was the spark for our animation as the overall theme of both animations was how the V&A was trying to produce more contemporary work and we wanted our animations to convey that and show the public a more modern side to the V&A.
Moving Brands Approach and Paths
For our animation project I was paired with Natasha and was given the V&A to create two bumpers for. We started off by first looking at what the V&A had on for current exhibitions to make something that was contemporary. We found different exhibition ranging from futurology to traditional work. So a vague gap for us to work in. However the futurology part was about video games and VR (virtual reality) so I focused my approach on creating something that combines video games and the V&A. Natasha went down the path of creating a more traditional animation that showed off different parts of the V&A. We wanted to go down a more fun route that was more quirky. This is when we came along the word ‘Liberality’ I have discussed what that word means and its importance to the V&A. A short version of it is that the word means the openness to new ideas. This was a word that we both use in our animation and is the theme of our animations. I looked more into classic video games that anyone will notice and realise what the animation is trying to convey.
Moving Brands Tutorial/Mid Way Crit Notes
Took some notes during the lecture about our brief to follow when we come to animation. Most of it was artist research which gave us a good starting point where we went off and started making some initial ideas.
FINAL MOVING BRANDS Animation
My third draft animation and the one I took to the pin up crit. This one is more polished with the new menu tune added which works well along with the V&A logo at the end to tie it to the brand and the other animation that we made.
Crit Feedback
Need to go over it again and make it feel more connected to the other animation. I can achieve this by making the start and the end the same as the other animation so they both have the same start and outcome at the end but just with different takes on the brief. I feel like this will make both animations solid.
Second Draft Animation Development
I improved on the animation and completed the parts where the logo would break off and the spaceship would fly around in a well done path. Parts I needed to do were to improve the sound effects and add more, I need to add the logo to the end part to make it feel more connected to the paired animation we are also creating. Small parts I need also work on but the bulk of the work had been done.
