She didn’t see Garcia for another two days. And when she did show up for a surgical consult, Trinity noticed the way she glanced at the spot by Trinity’s ear, like she was looking for that fucking mark. Of course she’d left it on purpose. Trinity ignored her, keeping her focus on the patient as she rattled off every step they’d taken so far. Because Trinity could be professional, thank you very much, and she felt on her game today. “Thank you, Doctor Santos,” Garcia said as Trinity finished presenting and Trinity bit the inside of her cheek. Apparently they weren’t doing the first name thing today. That was fine. It didn’t affect Trinity at all when Garcia threw out Trinity like the cherry on top of her praise.

“You okay?” Santos’s voice was unusually gentle as she watched Victoria’s mother walk away. Her elbow gently nudged Victoria’s arm. “Yeah,” Victoria nodded, blinking quickly. “It’s.. you know. She’s always like that.” Santos let out a small hum that sounded like disapproval and was quiet for a moment before saying, “Whitaker and I are planning on ordering a shit ton of Chinese takeout tonight and watching trash reality tv. Do you wanna join us? It seems like you could use a night away from your parents.” “Oh,” Victoria couldn’t keep the surprise out of her tone. “I’m not sure if they’d like that.” “Just tell them we’re helping you study,” Santos said, slinging an arm over Victoria’s shoulder in an overly familiar way that made Victoria’s stomach flip. “I know we might not be on your genius level, but we did both pass all of our exams. Way more recently than your parents did, too.”

Things with Parker were good, solid. Trinity never had to double check if their plans were still on, Parker had actually seemed deeply confused the first few times Trinity had texted her to make sure she should still come over, so she’d stopped. Parker also always seemed to remember what Trinity liked when they ordered takeout and she insisted on paying for everything. Trinity was still trying to get used to it. If she was being honest, she was still waiting for the other shoe to drop. No one was ever this nice to her for this long unless they wanted something.

Something unspoken seemed to pass between Baran and Emery as they looked at each other. Emery’s lips quirked into a small smile and Baran nodded once before turning back to Samira and asking, “Would you like to come home with us?” Samira wondered if she’d somehow had more to drink than she’d realized. Or maybe she’d fallen off of a barstool and hit her head. She ran through different medical events that could lead to sudden hallucinations before realizing that being able to recall that many potential diagnoses actually ruled out most of the list. But something had to be happening, because there was no way that she’d heard correctly.

Mel’s day had taken plenty of unexpected turns, but watching the fireworks with Trinity Santos was possibly the strangest of all. Okay, that wasn’t true. She was still reeling from finding out about Becca’s secret boyfriend, but watching fireworks with Trinity was a close second place. She’d been finishing up the last few paper charts that had needed to be entered into the system when Trinity had asked, for the second time that day, if something was bothering her. Mel couldn’t resist answering honestly, so she’d said, “My sister and I were supposed to watch the fireworks together, but she canceled on me.” To her surprise instead of the receiving a that sucks or some similar sentiment in response, Trinity had told her that she’d also been blown off for her fireworks plans. And then she’d suggested watching the fireworks together. In Mel’s desperation for company, she’d agreed. Even though she’d half-expected Trinity to laugh and immediately rescind the offer, for it to be some kind of prank. But Trinity also seemed more subdued than usual, like she was fraying around the edges, and Mel thought that maybe she needed company just as badly.

Baran was standing by the patient board, letting Dana catch her up on what she’d missed while she’d been in with a trauma, when she overheard Santos say to Whitaker, “I’m surprised they even let you on the farm with that gay little mullet.” It made Baran freeze. She certainly hadn’t clocked Santos as someone who could be homophobic, in fact she’d thought the opposite. But when she looked over, Whitaker didn’t seem upset, he was just standing there letting Santos ruffle his hair while Javadi laughed in the background. “Should I step in there?” Baran asked Dana, trusting that she’d have the full read on the situation. “No,” Dana let out a short laugh. “Santos and Whitaker are roommates. I’m pretty sure she gave him that haircut.”
