I was reading the opening passage of Rumi’s great epic-length Persian mystical poem the Masnavi, at the end of the opening night two weeks ago. On my birthday I’m whispering those couplets to myself - couplets I learnt sometime in my childhood (in its original Persian, not English). I have understood these words differently as I have grown from a child into a woman, and I’ve noticed how my perspective has changed over the years. Everyone is against ageing – but now I salute the arrival of a few white hairs and tiny wrinkles, as there are many untold stories are written in them that I can’t disguise. If you look closely perhaps you’ll see traces of my laughter and anxiety. But don’t hesitate to come closer, next time you bump into me and spot grey hairs and wrinkles. I don’t care because they may say the some of the things that are difficult to say in words. I am enslaved by the moon. Other than the moon, say no more.               

Other than talk of candles and sugar; for me, say no more.                     

Speak not of pain, only speak of riches                                                               

Suffer not from this ignorance, say no more.                                                 

Last night passion took me. Love saw me and spoke:                                         

“Fret not, cry not, drink not! I have arrived, say no more.”                                  

I contested: “Oh Love, it is something other that I fear.”                                     

Replied Love: “It is none other than this. Say no more                                       

I shall whisper hidden words in your ears                                                            

Turn thy head that has rot and say no more                                                 

The moon’s spirit has been found in the way of your heart                         

What a sweet venture the way of the heart is! Say no more.”                      

Said I: “Oh Heart,  what visions do you allude to         

For this path is unfathomable. Say no more!”                                           

Asked I: “Is what is before me an angel or just my humility?”                      

Love answered:This is neither angelic nor humility. Say no more!”                    

I cried: “What is this? Speak! I shall go insane!”                                           

Love replied: “Control thy sanity and speak no more                                      

Oh you, sitting here in your own fantasies                                                  

Arise, pack your garments, and leave this place. Say no more!”                  

Said I: “Oh Heart, please show me that this is not the work of the divine.”  

Love replied: “True that this is not, but for the love of the divine, say no more.”
