The Bible
I am reading the Bible, and I find it hard. I know that is probably a stupid thing to say, but they say the Bible is like a library. I have just finished the Law and so I guess I have a basic course in Judaic priestery under my belt; but it doesn't mean anything without St. Paul. So maybe I will just read St. Paul now, rather than continue with Joshua, Judges etc. I am thinking of going back to school and studying theology at a Catholic university. I have never really read any St. Paul systematically (that's how Schopenhauer referred to it, he distinguished between systematic reading and "fire at will" reading in which one takes up some random parts of the text, truly the reading style of an academic).
I am no Catholic, mind you, I am not even baptized. I just think it´d be great to be a priest, and as besuits me I want to do it in the most economical way possible. I think reading the Bible is the best preparation for becoming a priest, but maybe you also have to study theology - in any case I am going to the Open Day in March.
So yesterday I hardly slept because I figured I could just stay awake until I had read the entire Bible. However, that is ludicrous. As they say, it is a library, and reading it cover to cover makes about as much sense as reading the entire library from the first book to the last book. You notice this in that the Bible is more fun to read when you read whatever you want to read, rather than cover to cover. I am not sure if the Bible is really a "pleasurable" book to read, however. The Law in any case is almost nothing more than lists listing the amount of people in the various tribes of Israel and several other things; but I do remember when I read the Priestly Blessing, or whatever it is called, I felt like I had completely understood the book. "The Lord bless you and keep you," etc.
The best thing about existence is that you get to make decisions. I could read the Bible or I could type a post on Tumblr. I prefer the latter - but the first one is better for my career, certainly: but it is all highly uncertain. After all, who would hire a person who studied theology for no reason? But I didn't. I´d like to be priest - I just don't know if it is really necessary to complete an expensive education in theology to be a priest; maybe it is enough to simply read certain parts of the Bible and then you know enough maybe.

(John Toews) (more…)

Veranderde men Bijbelteksten?
categorie : religie

Is de Bijbeltekst vaak veranderd?
