He remembered their fateful meeting like it was yesterday. He noticed the circumstantial comparisons that he and Goku Jr had in regards to the dynamic between Goku Sr and Yamcha. How they were once enemies and now friends. But he couldn't help but feel that that's where the comparisons ended. Despite the uncanny resemblances in terms of physical appearances aside from clothing of course, Mr Ho as much different from Yamcha. Him and Son Kakarot Goku Jr met in similar ways to Goku Sr and Yamcha. But there were several differences as well.
For one Goku Sr was still a kid, about 12 to 14 years old when he met Yamcha the desert bandit, purely by chance in the sands of Diablo desert. Mr Ho was the exact same age as Goku Jr and they met at the age of 18. Another major difference was how they met. They had both had similar backgrounds prior to. With both of them being recruited for circumstances that led to the fateful encounter. They met in the space between sandland Forest land Northland and Southland. They met on the battlefield. They met on opposite sides of the war between sandland and Forest land against Northland and Southland. Son Kakarot Goku Jr was the lieutenant general of both Forest Land and Sand Land's joint brigade under the command of General Rao Shiva. Though he was never a fan of following orders to the letter, General Shiva had once knew deep down that it would be best to trust his instincts alongside Vegeta Jr who also was a similar rank fighting alongside his rival, comrade and best friend. That they were never too keen on following orders from higher-ups, they became Legends because of the results they got. Both the highest success rate of missions and operations, the highest amount of victories for the side they fought on, the lowest amount of losses, the highest efficiency rate of success, as well as the one they both took the most pride in, but especially the Saiyan Prince of Fire Mountain. The lowest casualty rate. Their tactics got results that preserve soldiers even ones that were not under their direct command.
Mr Ho was a tactician during that war and in a similar rank. He had similar track records for his side when the war broke out. When they met, they had a perfect track record of victories and zero losses. That all changed with the brutal battle that occurred. Several series of skirmishes of various different types of units, infiltration, bloodshed, deception, reconnaissance, and some of the bloodiest battles of the war. The battle was so intense that it resulted in a stalemate. However this battle also opened the doors for peace. While many on both sides were more than happy to wipe out anyone that was the enemy, Goku Jr had actively chosen to spare Mr Ho when he was at the Saiyan's mercy. The choice that led to the doors of peace. This was also the last battle of the war. For it was the battle that led to the peace treaty between all four lands. They were enemies by circumstance, then. And he was hoping to have been able to relax after getting out of a war himself but that war, Mr Ho remembered quite well. It was far worse between the war between Northland and Southland. He had witnessed countless comrades die. Including his own comrades in the Devil's Pen Pals squadron. All were killed during that last long bloody battle. Killed by the Saiyans themselves but it was when they actively chose to spare him and even save his life, and even his own late squad mates only acted out of rage that he realized, that they were just trying to save as many of their men as they could. No point and unnecessary bloodshed. As part of the peace treaty ceremony, Goku Jr had actually gathered the Dragon Balls and through a wish from shenron and even Porunga, he revived everyone who had died in the war. it took another war to unify them all in one banner.
By that point, Goku Jr had been promoted from lieutenant General to a full rank General. Placing Mr hoe and the devil's pen pals under his direct command in another war. This war was much different and it was truly a test of leadership from all aspects of their side including Goku Jr. Especially Goku Jr. He wasn't like most generals. He wasn't like most high-ranking officers for that matter.
He was never the type to just sit around behind an office desk in some safe location giving out orders from a safe distance while his soldiers were risking their lives and putting themselves on the line for the safety of their people of each of their respective countries. No he always preferred to fight on the front lines and command his soldiers in the line of battle itself. He was a leader yes, but he was the leader that led head on and chose to fight in the battle itself. Much to his command's chagrin. He was also the type of leader that would negotiate at times as well whenever the opportunity was there. It's how he actually won a quarter of his battles. The other through covert ops, gorilla tactics, diplomacy, and adaptability armed with sheer determination. One of his biggest approaches was diplomacy, which would have been contradictory towards the ruthlessness and determination of quick action, if it hadn't been for the fact that they actually balanced each other out in that regard. He was a man who could win battles with not just his raw power and strength through sheer force, but also through his words and ability to reason.
In some battles, Mr Ho had seen Son Kakarot Goku Jr actively go as far as to save as many of his men as possible, focusing on them rather than the mission and operation at hand. In other battles, he had seen him show a ruthless Force that brought many of his enemies to their knees. Laying massive destruction in their wake. But on just as many occasions, he had also seen his Commander pursue peaceful solutions, ceasefires and even negotiations for the terms of surrender of his enemies. More often than not, he knew from his own eyes of witnessing this particular Saiyan action, when given the opportunity, Son Kakarot Goku Jr, General of the Forest Land, Sand Land, Northland and Southland alliance military, always attempted to make peace. To save as many lies on all sides of a war.
His ruthlessness was not meant for recklessness, nor was it meant for bloodlust. It was to end battles as quickly as possible and save as many lives in the process that he possibly can. He had seen this pragmatic side of the second Saiyan of Earth in every approach he took. He chose efficiency over dominance and glory. He chose peace over conquest. He targeted the strongest parts of the enemy when showing his more ruthless side. Crippling their defense and their offense as quickly as possible by targeting it at their strongest areas. He tactfully would go after their more powerful weapons and units first. Capturing their bases and crippling their leadership rather than leading full scale assaults whenever possible. Conquering outposts first to give them a more strategic advantage. He made sure he had to leverage whenever possible. And he would risk his life in order to do that more often than not. He would only lead at most an entire platoon when taking over the outposts or crippling the defenses of fortresses. He would lead the fighter squadrons head on to the flagships, trusting his instincts as it happened. And it always worked. Not perfectly, of course, but the battles were always won.
And here he was witnessing his General, the man that he served directly under the command of, planning out a strategy with his fellow generals, including Vegeta Jr. And Mr Ho couldn't help but smile at the fact that despite their differences, despite the circumstances of how they met, despite their past transgressions, that it was an honor to be Son Kakarot Goku Jr's second in command.
