THE WAY I WON SO HARD
Now the only thing missing is George showing up and putting this guy in his place by resuming his position as the No.1 Bertha supporter
Merrick complementing Bertha and comparing her beauty and gowns to Italian art in front of George was insane
Step up your game or get out George!!!!! Some men want to join your wife's harem.
I have to give it to Mr Merrick he played his cards well with Bertha her guard was completely down with him and he made her laugh. Bertha only feels free with George. He even made Mamie Fish laugh and he's sassy too. The whole I've seen you at the MET but too intimidated to come up to you was well played.

Review: Release by M.R. Merrick
Well, this is definitely not a trilogy.
In this third installment (of there definitely better be more series), Chase finds himself dealing with the issue that is Riley, and his journey to find the soul pieces. Of course, much more than that occurs.
I am so incredibly happy with how the characters have developed. Tiki and Vincent in particular - Merrick did a fantastic job making these characters project off the page and into my life. But you see, I may have started to smile every time Tiki stood up for Vincent and said, "awww" in my head. Which means, in fangirl language,
Yeah. That happened. Maybe it's all in my head, but it's all beautiful in my head. Needless to say, once you start wild shippings, you know something special is going on.
Have I mentioned Merrick's humor? Well, the moments of sarcastic angst had me smirking all over the place. Until something major happened. Morgana faces for this book.
That being said, I had some major issues with the pacing. Specifically, this book involved more than one major action scenes. As a result, I can't even remember how many, or specific ones because it's all jumbled in my head. And they are described in great detail. If you're into that thing, great. But I honestly got bored after reading Chase struggle with some demon that you know he'll defeat somehow or other with a fantastic power play for the tenth time. I'd skim a lot of those, without losing any of the plot. I think the books pacing suffered a lot from those, and it's a difficult to handle without cutting those intricate details (and I could understand why some wouldn't want to).
Which leads me to the conclusion that this book was too long. For the first half, the pacing was perfect. But then more and more obstacles kept popping up - then were defeated. Until something else huge popped up - to be defeated also. It finally got to the point where I was asking if we were ever going to actually see something big happen. So much time was devoted to developing these other, smaller obstructions, that I believe a lot of the effect of the finale confrontation, that had been built up the entire book, was taken away. Anticipation is good, but there comes a point where the wait spoils the meal.
It's unfortunate because I really enjoyed all else about the book, but the pacing ultimately through me for a looper that spoiled the rest. If you're one to enjoy great sequence of adventures, you probably won't have a problem! But I read for the moments of Chase's great insight, and the sweet moments between Tiki and Vincent, as well as the pleasure of watching characters deal with hurtles - when a balance has been struck between the three. And for me, the pacing of the plot outraced all else.

Review: Shift by M.R. Merrick
*Warning: Contains spoilers for Exiled, book #1. My review for it can be found here*
I enjoyed this book much more than the first. What was lacking with the first, I found answers to in the this book. Rayna and Chase's relationship was fantastically developed. Definitely no insta-love here. Instead, I sat back and relaxed as I watched these two people come to know and respect one another. They developed a functional relationship first, before it developed into something with a little more chemistry. And that in and of itself was such a breath of fresh air in YA. It's not that every character falls for another instantly, but there's a lot of lusting away at first sight, and then BAM! something extraordinary occurs that makes them realize their love. This doesn't typify all YA books, but I do think the majority (maybe a 4:5 ratio) of books do. So, thank you, thank you, thank you Merrick, for the development.
Then I kind of actually enjoyed watching Marcus and Chase Alpha male it out. Mostly because it allowed me to see a side of Marcus that I really felt was lacking in the first book. He's so vulnerable from Chase's mother's death that he yields authority to a teenager. In my world, no adult does that. So it really say's something how this death turned everything on its head for Marcus. So in some twisted turn-about-view, I find his acceptance of Chase's "coming of age" realistic, in a case where it would normally not be realistic at all.
Again, though, there was a point in the plot where things didn't quite flow, and this was at the end. All of a sudden, I felt as if things were happening much to fast without any thought. There's a point when Chase discovers how to use his ring, and with out any second thought, jumps dimensions. Another time, the gang decides to go off on a mission to a hellic dimension, and I'm just sitting there like, "Wait, shouldn't you at least think about this for a moment?!"And we know something's wrong when I start acting like the adult in a situation.
But honestly, that doesn't take away from my love of the story. Because it is such a beautifully crafted novel with amazing characters. I really do love them, and honestly can't wait for the next book.
Review: Exiled by M.R. Merrick
Thanks to the author for sending a copy of this book!
I have been eyeing Matt’s books for a long time. So long that’s it’s pathetic I didn’t pick them up sooner. But as soon as I heard from Val about the tour for the release of his new book, I jumped on board. And I’ve finally sat down to read Exiled. And, boy, am I glad that I ever.
I’ll admit it, I didn’t like the beginning. Or rather, I felt as if there wasn’t much of a beginning. I know some people like it when books jump right into the gist of things, and, honestly, it’s a stylistic preference. Me, though, I like my introductions. Despite the fact that I felt as if I were rushing into the midst of a problem though, Matt did an incredible job of bringing me up to speed.
Not long after the ‘beginning,’ I found myself completely invested in the story. I fell for Chase, and the situation he’d been thrust into. Rayna might be the embodiment of everything I love in a character. While the plotline of ‘Hunters’ vs. ‘Demons’ might be familiar, Matt made uniquely his own by pulling a few fresh twists here and there. Oh, and Willy! You know that tertiary character that’s kind of awkwardly hanging out in the background, and you fall in love with them just for being there and being awkward? That’s Willy. He’s so darn cute, I really hope I get to see more of him in Shift.
I’ll admit, I’m not sure how I feel about the adults in the story yet; Riley is evil, almost too evil…but I feel as if there’s something else going on underneath the surface that’ll be revealed later, so I won’t judge him yet. I didn’t see much of Chase’s mother, but it’s clear right off the bat that he cares about her. Again, though, I feel as if I’m missing some crucial history, and that’s nagging at me…And as for Marcus, I really don’t get him. I don’t like getting characters. At all. Which is probably what’s putting me off, so I can’t wait to find out more in the next books. But I will say, every other character that Matt introduces, I form a bond with. I love the trolls, I love the goblin (don’t make a goblin mad guys!!!), I even kinda love Vincent, and I love the bird. Any character that carries a bird on his/her shoulder is instantly awesome.
Fan’s of fantasy should definitely check this one out; I’ll keep you all updated as I continue reading the series!
