22. GUCCI MANE - TRAP HOUSE 3
If you've been paying attention at all, you know what an insane year it was for Gucci. As his flow has gotten progressively slower and lazier, his output has skyrocketed--the count for full-length releases this year has long ago passed into double digits, and duplicate tracks and rereleased songs notwithstanding, Mr. Zone 6 has showered us with an unbelievable amount of music, and he's still saying we'll see The State vs. Radric Davis 2 before the year is out despite his legal strife. Between altercations with the law, Gucci became the most prolific artists of the year, making nose-to-the-grindstone workhorses like Curren$y (who was no slouch with new music this year) look as lazy as Gucci sounds right now. His always-good never-stunning p standard shit talk raps sounds increasingly blunted, burbling up through cups of lean and clouds of gas. The drug use turned into bizarre aggression this year, apparently beefing with Waka Flocka even as he released tracks that featured his former cohort, finally exploding into the now-famous twitter rant that was as vitriolic as it was incoherent. After claiming that he fucked pretty much...everyone, Gucci announced he was going into rehab, only to be charged and incarcerated a few months later for a September 14th firearm violation. Yeah, 2013 has been some typea year for Gucci Mane.
It's appropriate, then, that Chief Keef appears on this cut from the third installment of Gucci's inaugural album. Keef has faced similar confrontations with the law due to parole violation with a firearm, and his lyrics show a similar lack of concern (or awareness, really) of the controversy, spitting unfazed mid-tempo threats over tremendous thundering beats by Zaytoven, 808 Mafia, and the ilk. A better representation of 2013, however, might be any number of Gucci tracks that feature Young Scooter or Young Thug, associates that shook up 2013 through a unique approach to the ominous 1017 signature sound. In this sense, Gas and Lean both have songs with guest features that better typify this year ("Christmas Tree," "Extacy Pill," "Don't Trust," etc.), and Diary of a Trap God most clearly crystallizes the neurotic-yet-oblivious solipsism that seemed to define Gucci in 2013 (see: "Me"), but Trap House III was simply the best tape. Songs like "Use Me" showcased Gucci's newly subdued, barely conscious murmer while "Hell Yes" demonstrated his ability to survive in a post-Future sing-rap landscape. (Three inclusions of Peewee Longway and two of Rich Homie Quan speak to Gucci's understanding of the way rap is moving this year, despite the apparent encompassing fog he lives in.) "Darker" sees Gucci moving in half time but lacking nothing for it--this isn't the Mr. Zone 6 who was making love the money, but he's still in it and he's not going anywhere (except possibly to prison for a long long time). Not many year end lists this far have found room for one of Gucci Mane's inconsistent, draggy, predictably thumpy tapes, but to ignore his output this year is to misunderstand how important he was in 2013. He redefined what "prolific" means in both pure number of releases (unbelievable) and content (not necessarily great). However scattershot, Gucci was important this year.
"CEO so who'm I signed to? / me. / I got beef so who I run to? / me."
Makin love to the money like a sex tape, I'm talkin Kim K, I'm talkin Ray J!
I will stan for Gucci and the insanity of what he's doing in 2013 (absurd output, world-weary verses accompanied by fittingly exhausted, morose rapping), but the only good part of the Trust God, Fuck 12 nonsense is the Young Thug verses. Remember this? Remember when Mr. Zone 6 was not only rapping his ass off ("Dat's My Life") but hitting the high notes? "Making Love to the Money" is equal parts impeccable hook-craft and extended-just-a-bit-too-far-metaphor, a banger that's also self-aware enough to be hilarious. As long as Gucci keeps putting out a tape every few weeks, we'll end the year with a huge number of pretty good tracks. But how long can we really put up with this scattershot approach when, not too long ago, Gucci was dropping gems like this?
