The little brown dragonet returned, it winked into his room announcing its precence with a chirrup and zipped wildly around the room. Excited thoughts whirled in its mind that it broadcast for him. Not getting a reaction quickly enough the firelizard landed on the foot of the bed and bounded up across the man's chest. His eyes glowed and whirled excited and distressed colors as he chirruped and hissed. The creature even tried words, sending them telepathically 'Help help! You need to help!'
Baribus’s head throbbed as color flooded his mind and vision. He let out a soft grunt and slowly lifted his hands and pressed them to his face. It had been a late night - even worse than most thanks to a certain anniversary that fell on that night.
Rubbing his eyes, the detective lowered one hand to feel numbly for the panicked fire lizard.
“There, lad, I’m alright,” he murmured hoarsely, resting his hand on the creatures head. “Just a rough night is all.”
There was subdued grief in his words, the kind that comes from an old hurt too deep for even the finest healers to touch. But even then, Baribus tried to ease the dragonet’s distress.
Gently, he stroked the beast, letting his fingers run over its smooth, leathery skin. It reminded him of having a cat on his chest and the thought so comforted him, that he began to stroke it as he would’ve stroked a cat. It was interesting how much of a comfort the little dragonet was. Just having it there was a comfort that helped soothe the grief of his lost love.
