Well, since the Great Turtle of Responsibility and Leadership™ gave me free reign (why would you do that? That’s dangerous.) I’m gonna talk a little bit about how I see the way Genji’s body functions! Because that’s so FASCINATING to me.
Anyway, I’m just going to focus on the way his cybernetic body perceives both tactile and emotional feelings. These things are incredibly hard to replicate and you’re never going to get the complete range. The human body and mind is incredibly complex, and even with the advances of science, they’re never going to be duplicated exactly through synthetic means, and when coming from someone who HAD full range for the better part of their life, being put in a situation where these are suddenly LIMITED, it’s no wonder that Genji had a hard time adjusting. It wasn’t just a limb or two. It was practically his entire body.
As far as tactile sense goes, he can feel pressure and consistency, but not so much finer details of texture. He can tell when something is hard, soft, rough smooth. But again, the complexity of texture, such as ‘scratchy’, the softness of fur, or the callouses of a hand, the grating texture of a fabric, etc, he can no longer really process. He can /see/ the texture, and make a mental association with the memory of it, like a phantom feeling, but not actually experiencing it. It’s as if his body is in a very early stage of numbness, where everything is dulled. He can feel pressure and weight, registering when something is pressed against him, or someone something is touching him. He also feels pain in his synthetic pieces in the sense of the synthetic nerves firing messages to his brain saying “this is a bad thing, and it hurts. Ow. You should get that looked at.” and so, it’s the perception and the association of pain rather than an actual experience of pain. The only places where he still has full range of tactile sensation is where he has organic tissue. Most of this, aside from his face, is either internal, or covered in a layer of synthetic tissue.
Genji’s brain is still human, and so the mental process of emotion is completely complex and adapting. However, his body can’t keep up. Hormones (such as endorphins and adrenaline), again, are only limited to organic tissues, and have to be simulated through any of his synthetic parts, but it doesn’t always match, or express correctly. For example, it’s like having an anxiety attack without having a means to expel that anxiety. There’s no shaking, palpitations, etc, and so since there’s no way to expel it through other means, it’s trapped mentally and often leads to sending signals that amplifies other reactions. Such as shortness and quickness of breath, which can also lead to amplifying the emotion in general. Panicking because you can’t panic. And it makes it harder to actually get a handle on and regulate (something that Genji was already shit at dealing with anyway. How do you deal with your emotions and problems? Shove them aside! Pretend they don’t exist. OH LOOK. PARTY TIME. FORGET MY PROBLEMS. JA NE~~. And now that’s out of the question so you can see how this would just be a REAL RIOT TO GET USED TO. Can’t cope with your emotions and neither can your body and all your unhealthy coping skills are out the window WHAT DO YOU DO???) He also… can’t cry. He can feel the urge to cry, but his eyes only produce what is biologically necessary not as an emotional response. And so it can be frustrating for when you need that cathartic release. and you can’t. This is true with all intense emotions, positive and negative.
Of course, these can be upgraded and fixed with time. It can get close. But it will never be exact, and he’s had to learn how to deal with that.
