Jane often chooses to emphasise fairness, even at high cost to herself. Jane is not loved by her guardians, but accepts this because she does not love them. Mrs Reed and Mr Brocklehurst call her a liar, and it is not only the public humiliation which upsets her, but also the injustice of the false claim. When Blanche and Mr Rochester are courting, she claims she would accept their relationship if Blanche were better than her. She attempts "to take the bad with the good" and make a balanced judgement of others, often not taking her personal opinions and feelings into account in an attempt to remain impartial.
