Isobel is a human painter who takes portrait commissions from vain and immortal fairies, unable to create anything (be it art, food, or gowns) for themselves. In exchange, she receives enchantments on her house that keeps her family (her aunt, her two goats-turned-human little sisters) safe and fed. She has no interest in the immortality offered to those favored by the fairfolk - a deal that would render her immortal but cost her family, feelings, and ability to paint. when she's commissioned by a rarely seen fairy, the Autumn Prince, a tentative friendship begins. Isobel recognizes a human sorrow in him and makes the mistake of displaying it in her painting - costing him his fearful reputation in court. Suddenly her new friend transforms into a literal monster, desperate to have her right her mistake, and Isobel has to figure out a way back home before it's too late.
