Hi! I'm going to cosplay as Vivi this September and I have a question to ask regarding your own cosplay: How did you make the glasses, if you made them, and where is the best place to look for materials? Or, who should I commission? Thank you.
I found a pair of glasses at a thrift store and rebuilt them. I dont have any wip pics but I’ll try to tell you how I did it through the magic of google photos!! ;) This is definitely a cheap but effective way about making her glasses. (Sorry I get a lil wordy)SUPPLIES:Half-frame circle sunglassesScissors or Exacto knifePlastic strawberry container (clean ur trash ;] )Pink cellophaneMod PodgeHot glue (kind of optional)ALTERNATIVE TO STRAWBERRY PLASTIC AND CELLOPHANE:If you can get pink acrylic, I’d definitely recommend that. It wont be as fragile. HERE’S a tutorial for using acrylic for Vivi’s glasses.TUTORIAL FOR MY METHOD UNDER THE CUTalong with some links to buy pre-made glasses
Originally I was going to saw off the top part of a pair of pink circle glasses but I wasnt sure how to cut them without completely destroying the lenses.
If you can think of a way to chop these up, I’d love to see your end result!
But I wasnt feeling adventurous. I played it safe and found a pair of half-frame circle sunglasses that I could safely hack apart. The store I bought em from has closed down but I found a listing on ebay for you! [LINK]
The frame was PERFECT and the circle lenses were held in with 3 weak little screws. They slide right out of the half-frame and youre left with an empty glasses frame skeleton. (heheh)I was in a hurry to finish my glasses in time for the Mystery Skulls show so the first time I made the lenses for Vivi, I scribbled red sharpie (i couldnt find my pink marker lmao) on a plastic container used to hold strawberries. I forgot where I learned this trick but it was pretty good. Temporarily.
Eventually the sharpie got sun-damaged and the lenses were streaky and B A D. I figured out a more permanent way to keep the lenses from fading.
PINK CELLOPHANE!! You can probably pick this stuff up from 99 cent store or another cheapy-type store (i got my roll at Daiso). If you cant find it in the party supply section of your dollar store, you may have to venture to a card or party supply store (Hallmark? Party City? one of em has to have it). Make sure its see-through enough so your vision isnt blocked at a con or w/e.So. Using your removed circle lenses, trace 2 circles onto your strawberry plastic. There should be a weird sharp fin-type shape from tracing. These will help stabilize the lenses in the frame later on. DONT MAKE PERFECT CIRCLES. Cut them out and fit them into your frames. You can mark where you’d like to get that half-circle cut with a crayon or washable marker. Once youre satisfied with how low or high you want the top flat part of your lenses to be in relation to the frame, get slicing! Just lop off the excess and throw it away. You should have 2 kinda pointy half-circles. Time to cut your cellophane.Cut two rectangles, each one large enough to cover the lens width-wise and long enough to fold over the front and back sides of the lens. Fold your 2 rectangles in half and crease. Paint one side of your plastic lens with your fav glue. I used matte Mod Podge because it dries pretty clear but you can probably use any good clear-drying glue.
Stick the flat end of the plastic into the crease of the cellophane. This will keep everything relatively straight and identical on both sides (and on both lenses). Paint more glue onto the backside of the plastic and cellophane. Flip the cellophane over to cover the backside. The lens may slip around a bit but try to keep it from moving too much. Repeat for the second lens. Place a book or something heavy and flat over your new pink lenses while they dry. When the glue is dry, cut off the excess cellophane from around your lenses. Dont cut into the plastic! BOOM. VIVI LENSES. Pop em in your frames just to check the fit. Should be good B^) I used black hot glue gun sticks (Daiso again) to glue the lenses into the frames but clear hot glue would work fine too. Maybe more mod podge?? Its up to you! Secure your lenses.Now. If you DONT want to spend time or are nervous about making your own with this method, there are a few vendors that are selling pretty good Vivi glasses pre-made and ready to wear.THIS person also sells homestuck glasses. If youre into that. There arent pictures yet but THESE might be right?? We’ll see.I know I’ve seen more available but I cant find them D:Anyone with a laser cutter and knowledge of cutting acrylic might take commissions. idk their prices but I’m p sure making your own will save you a SIGNIFICANT amount of monies.Thank you for asking and I hope this helps!!! Show me your cosplay when you’re done ok? ;))
