Mr Shadow

Out of the corner of your eye, you see him. The tall black man that's always there, but disappears after a moment. Don't worry, he always comes back. " Mr Shadow," I call him "are we going to play" I watch my surroundings. White walls, solid furniture decorating the open space. Silver bunk beds, Blue walls with pictures of bunnies and sunshine painted whimsically and drawings of happy children with happy parents. "Mr Shadow" There he is. "What game do you want to play?, Mr Shadow," "Follow the leader," his breathy voice was deep "Ohhhhhh, I love that game" I was delighted, this game was my favorite. I'd always be in a new place every time, always fascinating. "Close your eyes" I followed Mr Shadows steps. My vision grew black. "Take three steps forward, One step to the left and Two steps to the right" "One, Two, Three" I counted as my feet lifted into the air and carried my body forward. "One step to the left, One step to the right" "Open your eyes" The world around me was vibrant, trees that were a lilac and grass that was an electric blue. My breath was taken away, this place was completely different to the other places, not how it looked but, how it felt. Security, Love, Hope Feelings I've never felt before. "Mr Shadow, why do you take me here?" My voice was high and curious "You will know soon, How do you feel?" "Happy" Mr Shadow stayed in the corner of my eye, he had a dark blurred body and a face I couldn't make out, so distant. "Good, close your eyes" "I want to stay, Please Mr Shadow, I know you say 'Mabel you can't stay' but please, I feel so safe. I don't want to go back to the orphanage. No one believes me about you" my voice was urgent. I hate the orphanage, the caretakers always brush me off and I know I won't get adopted, I'm 17. No body wants a 17-year-old when they could have a sweet little baby. "Mabel, you must go back. Close your eyes" My face felt hot as my eyes closed, pushing tears down my cheeks I open my eyes to find myself in the same room, same bunk beds, same blue walls, but a care taker dressed in an apron and white shirt with dark pants stands in the doorway. "Mabel, you have a possible parent waiting to see you" I walk along the shiny tiled floors They won't adopt me I walk into the head caretakers office to see the head caretaker sitting in her black spinning chair and a man. Dressed in black, smiling. He looks so familiar, yet so foreign. "Mabel, this is Mr Benjamin Shadow, he would like to adopt you"
