Gr. I Winner Mshawish Retired
Multiple grade I winner Mshawish has been retired from racing after a minor soft tissue injury was discovered June 3 at Belmont Park.
After conferring with veterinarian Duncan Moir, the team of owner Al Shaqab Racing determined that it was in the best interest of Mshawish for him to be retired, since the timing would likely call for the son of Medaglia d'Oro to miss the key prep races leading up to his year-end goal—the Breeders' Cup Classic. Mshawish will now be sent to his new home at Taylor Made Stallions, where he will stand stud in 2017.
Having won the Donn Handicap of last year and having contested the Dubai World Cup (finishing sixth), Mshawish was in training for a start in the 2016 Met Mile at Belmont Park.
"Although it's sad to miss the Met Mile next Saturday and to not finish out the rest of 2016, it's hard to do anything but smile looking back at Mshawish's long career," said Bradley Weisbord, U.S. advisor to Al Shaqab Racing. "He was a rare grade I winner on both turf and dirt. He was as consistent of an elite racehorse that there is. ... He is an incredibly special horse for the entire Al Shaqab team, and really helped us get the U.S. operation off the ground. We are looking forward to seeing him pass that top-class grittiness and consistency onto his progeny, and having quite a few run in the Al Shaqab colors. We will undoubtedly support him heavily."
Mshawish finishes his career with a record of 24-8-2-3 with earnings of $2,421,351. Five of his wins were graded.
Mshawish
May 16, 2010 - Still Alive Raced from 2012-2016 Throughbred Stallion - Everywhere (Bred in Kentucky though)
I couldn't find any documentation on how he got his name.
Mshawish's early career was literally all over the place. His debut race was at Chantilly in France, finishing 5th in his only start at two. At three, he broke his maiden on his second start at Saint Cloud in France. Back to Chantilly for a 2nd place in the Prix de Guiche and fourth in the Prix du Jockey Club-French Derby. Then it was onto Ascot in England for a 4th in a Weight For Age Stakes, and back to France to Deauville racetrack to win another Weight For Age Stakes. His final European start was a 7th place finish in the Qatar Prix Daniel Wildenstein at Longchamp in France.
In 2014 he started the year running his first three races at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai. There he placed second in the Al Fahidi Fort, winning an unlisted Group 2 race, and finishing 4th in an unlisted Group 1 race. He then shipped to Sha Tin racetrack in Hong Kong to finish 8th in the Champions Mile. In July of 2014 he finally set foot onto American soil where he entered and placed 6th in the G3 Metropolitan Jets Oceanport Stakes at Monmouth. He followed up his US debut with a pair of third place finishes in an Allowance and the Knickerbocker Stakes. In December he finally won his first start in America, the El Prado Stakes at Gulfstream.
Mshawish kept up his winning streak to two more, winning the G2 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes and G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap. It was back to the skies and back to Meydan for a third place finish in an unlisted G1 race in March. He got a little breather and didn't come back to the track until August with a 5th place finish in the Fourstardave Handicap. He ran in the 2015 Breeders Cup Mile, but finished 4th, and ending up finishing the same as he rounded out 2015 in the Cigar Mile.
So far in 2016 he has raced twice, winning both times. He won the Hal's Hope Stakes in January and the Donn Handicap in February. He is currently either on his way, or will soon be on his way, back to Meydan in Dubai to enter in the 2016 Dubai World Cup. He will be going up against California Chrome, Frosted and many other hard-knocking horses.
It was announced that Mshawish will be pointed to the Breeders' Cup Classic as the end of the year goal, and then be retired to stand at Taylor Made Stallions for the 2017 breeding season.
Throughout his career he has been to France, England, Hong Kong, Dubai and America, and while in America has raced at Monmouth, Saratoga, Belmont, Keeneland, Aqueduct and Gulfstream. Hope he gets good frequent flier miles!
