Mstislav I Vladimirovich Monomakh, also called Mstislav the Great, was the first son of Gytha of Wessex and Vladimir II Monomakh. Due to his mother’s line, he is often mentioned as Harald. His historical role was quite significant, as he built multiple churches, including St. Nicholas Cathedral and the St. Anthony Cloister, in Novgorod and Kyiv during his reign as the Grand Prince of Kyiv (1125-1132). The featured icon dates back to 1892 and depicts Mstislav I standing against the backdrop of Kyiv.

He has a good radio voice most of the time, very clear and well-spoken, until he gets mad and then HE YELL AND SWEAR AND NONSENSE. Like the Russian version of received pronunciation, absolutely pristine, until angery, then that & grammar goes out the window along with his dignity

acts overly-friendly and all "i am harmless, honest!" but if you look into his eyes you can see bastardness

В 1966 году он получил звание Народного артиста СССР, а до этого в 1951 году стал лауреатом Сталинской премии, в 1964 - Ленинской. Первую же свою награду Слава получил в послевоенном 1945 году, ей стала золотая медаль на Всесоюзном конкурсе музыкантов-исполнителей в Москве.

В музыке, по словам Ростроповича, было 3 человека, оказавших на него огромное влияние - Сергей Прокофьев, Дмитрий Шостакович и Бенджамин Бриттен.

В 1969 году Мстислав Ростропович и его супруга Галина Вишневская поддержали Александра Солженицына, разрешив опальному писателю жить на своей даче, а также написали письмо Леониду Брежневу. В ответ власти приостановили гастрольные туры музыкантов, а также запись их произведений. Покинуть страну супруги смогли только в 1974 году, а в 1978-м их лишили советского гражданства. В этом же году прямо в день своего рождения Слава был исключен из Союза композиторов СССР.

Во время эмиграции Ростропович был одним из ведущих мировых дирижеров. В течение 17 сезонов он был бессменным дирижёром и художественным руководителем Национального симфонического оркестра в Вашингтоне, который под его руководством вошёл в число лучших оркестров Америки, и регулярным гостем Берлинской филармонии, Бостонского симфонического оркестра, Лондонского симфонического оркестра и Лондонской филармонии. Его последними записями были Концерт для виолончели с оркестром № 2 Шнитке и “Возврат в Россию” - уникальный документальный фильм о поездке Ростроповича в Москву с Национальным симфоническим оркестром в 1990 году.

В августе 1991 года он вышел из дома в Париже по бытовым делам, но узнал о попытке путча в СССР. Музыкант сразу выехал в аэропорт, чтобы вылететь в Москву для того, чтобы оказаться в Белом доме и поддержать Бориса Ельцина.

После возвращения в Россию Слава продолжил свою творческую деятельность, а также занялся благотворительностью. Он был президентом Благотворительного фонда Вишневской- Ростроповича, оказывающего помощь детским лечебным учреждениям Российской Федерации, а также одним из попечителей школы имени А. М. Горчакова, возрождаемой в духе и традициях Царскосельского лицея.

Скончался Мстислав Ростропович ровно через месяц после своего 80-летия - 27 апреля 2007 года, буквально через несколько дней после смерти своего близкого друга Бориса Ельцина. Они похоронены рядом на Новодевичьем кладбище Москвы.

Mstislav Valerianovich Dobuzhinsky died on this day in 1957. The artist was born on August 19th 1975, he attended the Drawing School of the Society for the Promotion of the Artists from 1885 to 1887. Between 1895 and 1899 he also read law at Law at the University of St. Petersburg.

His work often focused on modern industrial cityscapes and he often painted distressing scenes of urban life and landscapes. His memoirs were published posthumously in Russian.
