A/N: sooo i may be shooting myself in the foot by posting this tiny teaser before I've even started writing the first chapter, but i really wanted y’all’s input on the plot - like, does it make sense? is it something you guys would want to read? Feedback is always welcome and GREATLY appreciated 😊

Summary: When a man like Pablo Escobar asks you to do something, you don’t exactly have the luxury of telling him “no” - even if you are his cousin, his family. So when he calls on you - after decades of no contact whatsoever - you have no choice but to agree to be his spy in the DEA - a fox in the hen house, as he put it. You never intended for it to go this far - to get this close - but when one Javier Peña charms his way into your bed - and into your heart - you find yourself being ripped apart by a loyalty to your family and a love that’s all-consuming. But it’s only a matter of time before it all goes up in flames.

Prologue

“Put the gun down, Mariposa,” he pleads, the barrel of his own gun staring you right in the face.

“You first,” you say through gritted teeth, each of your ragged breaths filling the heavy silence. The pounding in your ears makes it difficult to focus but you somehow manage to hold the gun steady as a trail of blood trickles down your forearm, the gash throbbing painfully. 

“I don’t want to hurt you,” Javi promises, his expression sincere and almost pained. 

He takes a step in your direction, "¡Que te pares, ya!" Your command reverberates off the walls, stilling him instantly. You take a step back but your heel hits the wooden beam under the couch—you have nowhere else to go. 

It wasn’t supposed to end up this way—you were supposed to just get some intel as to how much the DEA knew about your cousin, Pablo, and then report back to him. Easy in, easy out—but, that’s hardly ever the case, isn’t it?

And once you’d realized just how far you’d fallen, the depths of your own self-sabotage had become too steep to climb.

Y si te descubren, tienes que acabar con ellos—a todos, Pablo’s words echo in your memory. You know you have no choice in the matter, because even if you are technically his family, that won’t stop him from killing you, along with all the people at the DEA you’ve come to care for.

“I never meant for any of this,” you whisper through trembling lips. Javier’s eyes flit from the gun in your hands to your eyes, his gun lowering slightly. As your finger locks onto the trigger, you force yourself to accept that this is your only way of surviving a life you never wanted to be a part of. 

Even if it means killing Javier—the man you’ve grown to love more than anything—and even if it completely severs your heart in the process.

“Please,” he croaks out, genuine fear filling his eyes—though you’re not sure if it is fear for his own life or yours. Your chest aches beyond belief, and in a way you always knew you would end up here—with a gun in your hand and your heart shattered to pieces. 

Releasing a shaky breath, a tear falls down your cheek just before you pull the trigger.

chapter 2 TEASER

alrightalrightalright i’ve finally finished writing chapter 2 of Mariposa Traicionera - just doing some edits and probs adding more to it 😂

i’m planning on posting it TONIGHT @ 8pm EST

but here’s a teeny tiny taste for y’all:

excerpt from Chapter 2 - “Fácil y Ligera”

Dios, this is gonna be harder than I thought.

“Thanks, Sally,” you accept the key and put it in your purse, setting it down on the wooden surface of your desk. “No problem,” she grins and turns to walk away, but not before Javi catches her eye and winks as he pulls a box of cigarettes from his shirt pocket.

She scurries off with a light giggle, her cheeks turning rosy. You shake your head with a quiet chuckle, settling into the creaky desk chair as you place your purse in one of the drawers. 

“What?” Javi raises his eyebrows questioningly, a cigarette resting between his lips, and you hate how attractive he looks with the sleeves of his burgundy-colored shirt rolled up to his elbows. 

Focus, Y/N, you're here to spy, not land a date - or anything else beyond that.

“Oh, nothing, Agent Peña. I was just...making an observation.” Shrugging as you lean back in your chair, you raise one eyebrow and cross your arms over your chest. Obviously, you’re a mujeriego - and I feel sorry for any woman who falls for your bullshit. 

He lights his cigarette and takes a long drag, “And what observation is that?” His eyes collide with yours the same moment he releases a large cloud of smoke through pursed lips.  

You’re grateful you're hidden behind the desk so he doesn’t see you clench your thighs, your body instantly reacting to him. I don’t even like smoking - how the hell does he make it look so...enticing? 

Leaning forward, your elbows resting on the edge of the desk, you elaborate, “Well, you clearly have a way with women. I'm just wondering, to what end? I mean, I'm sure you’ve broken a few hearts along the way - so, why do it, if you know they’ll end up getting hurt in the end?” You’re not sure why his behavior bothers you so much. You’ve known the man for all of 15 minutes and he’s already managed to piss you off through facial expressions alone. 

But, why do I give a shit what or who he does on his own time? 

Fighting the urge to roll your eyes at yourself, you release a breath through your nose, adding “I'm just curious,” with a subtle shrug of your shoulder.

He watches you for a moment as he considers your words, taking another drag as you avert your eyes, your throat feeling dry. “I guess-” he starts but pauses, as if rethinking what he’s going to say. 

“I’ve honestly never thought about...why,” he furrows his brow, putting his cigarette out in the ashtray on his desk. “They know it's not a permanent thing and if they get attached,” he shrugs as he rests his hands on his hips, “nothing I can do about that.”

Mariposa - Chapter 3 TEASER

just finished the rough draft of chapter 3, which will be around 5k words 😍

I'm hoping to edit tomorrow and post it either Monday or Tuesday @ 8pm EST but in the meantime, here's a little unedited snippet 💜

Excerpt from Chapter 3

He seemingly comes to a realization as he asks you, “Wait, you don’t have a telephone at home?” His tone is genuinely curious and the simplicity of the conversation almost makes you chuckle.

“Um, no, I don’t - it’s broken,” you stammer, struggling to come up with a lie while he’s watching you so intently. His tongue absentmindedly swipes over his bottom lip, instantly calling your attention to his mouth. 

Stop staring, you drag your eyes back to his only to find him staring at your lips as well and you suddenly wish you’d worn less layers today, your body growing feverish under his gaze. 

The intensity in his eyes makes your heart race and your skin tingle as if he’s stroking you with the tip of a feather. That image alone has a small gasp getting caught in the back of your throat. Enough of this, Y/N. You force yourself to look away, heading straight for your desk without another word, hoping he'll let the moment - whatever it was - be forgotten.

But then you remember this is Javier you're talking about - the man probably doesn’t even know the definition of discreet.

“Do you like...dancing?” his question has you lifting your head in confusion. He’s joking, right? I mean, he hardly seems like the dancing type...if he’s asking what I think he’s asking. 

Your curiosity gets the best of you and you find yourself indulging him, “Why do you ask?” Crossing your arms over your chest, you await his response, which is sure to be...interesting, to say the least.

Yeah, why do I ask? Javi thinks as you squint suspiciously at him, no doubt assuming the worst. And he can’t blame you, given his reputation.

Truthfully, he wasn’t planning on joining Steve and Connie tonight when Steve had invited him that morning... 

“We need a fuckin’ break, man - we’ve been working nonstop and we’re no closer to Escobar than we were two weeks ago,” he releases a heavy sigh, dragging a hand down his face. 

Javi simply nods in agreement, too exhausted to respond. He pulls out a cigarette and lights it while Steve continues, “Connie wants to get out of the apartment too, so I was thinking of taking her to that bar we went to a while back - the one with live music. You in?”

He slows to a stop as they near the embassy’s entrance, his eyes landing on a familiar figure a few yards away. She’s here early. 

Your head is bent down, holding the telephone to your ear in a white-knuckled grip when your eyes land on his and he can’t help but notice the color in your cheeks, despite the strained look on your face. 

Steve lightly smacks his arm, calling his attention back to him, “You got a thing for her, huh?” he asks, a knowing glint in his eye. Javi merely raises an eyebrow as he drops his cigarette on the ground, grinding it under his boot. 

He rolls his eyes, “I’ll meet you inside, pendejo,” then looks back at you, Steve following suit and walking away with a stupid smirk on his face. Yeah, yeah, mind your own business, Javi thinks as he heads in your direction. 

I do not have a thing for her. What is this - fucking high school?

But as Javi watches you patiently wait for him to answer your question, he can’t think of a good reason why he’s about to ask you to go dancing with him - well, with him, Steve, and Connie. 

Too late to turn back now, though.
