Hi, I've always been into acting and singing and recently I've really decided I want to go into musical theatre. I have a pretty good voice and am taking lessons, but the problem is that I can't dance. At. All. I look like a chicken. Which sucks because my dream role is Katherine in Newsies, but that's a very dance heavy show. Any tips on how I can Improve this? Does this Lower my chances of getting into shows?
It really depends on the show. Some shows, like Newsies as you say, are very dance-driven and would require high dance skill, in the same way that Les Mis is singing/acting-driven. So while your current skillset might lower your chances of getting into some shows, there are still tons of roles available for you.
The show I’m in at the moment, Spamalot, has a lot of dancing roles BUT the choreographer has said that with this show, entertaining the audience is more important than getting every step perfect. Obviously not all choreographers are as lenient as that, especially in professional theatre, but confidence and characterisation in dance is just as important as knowing the steps.
In the long-term my best advice to you, as you plan on going into the industry, is to work hard to improve your dance skill instead of writing it off as something you can’t do. Dance lessons, obviously, are a massive help - I’d suggest beginning with ballet classes to improve control and technique. Ballet is a great foundation for any dancer. But if all else fails, find some lessons online and dance in front of a mirror. Any practice is good practice!
There’s no reason why you can’t be Katherine if you work hard. Watch some videos of Newsies and other shows you love and try copying the choreography (just the simple stuff to begin with!) - if you keep at the practice and identify and improve aspects you struggle with, you’ll see a whole world of difference in a short time!
