With SH1 closed, we headed along SH4 and 47. The Makatote Viaduct looked neat. With Mt Ruapehu hiding before, we weren't holding much hope in seeing the volcanoes. Then they started to emerge. Managed to grab some nice shots of Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngauruhoe, and Mt Tongariro. No eruptions, but still amazing to look at.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing - 🇳🇿 New Zealand The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is an incredible 19.4 km hike on New Zealand’s north island. Taking about 7 hours, weather depending, the hike will take you through mostly volcanic terrain. The three active volcanoes, Mount Tongariro, Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngaurohoe are surrounded by thermal vents, solidified lava flows and mineral hot springs which along with the altitude changes makes for a very varied, beautiful journey!
