2007 Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon always blows me away. It s what California is capable of in my opinion. The #wine has this terrific tension between its parts...freshness in spades yet beautiful ripeness. Incredible depth of flavor yet silky texture. Old world charm/elegance and new world brashness. Blackcurrant and plum fruit playing against the backdrop of eucalyptus herbaceouness. This stuff is like a symphony in the glass. And at going on 10 years old, this is still a puppy. Day 2 in the Rubissow-Sargent realm, this considerably softer St. Em blend of CF and ME is definitely showing its age. Unlike the 94 cab of last night, this 93 Les Trompettes brings Robitussin and green-briar to the nose and chalky, dry, fruitless well-aged nothingness to the palate. I mean... it's *good*... I'm not kicking it outa bed but I mean by all rights and purposes, this thing is DONE. Not unpleasant, great tertiary and aplomb, but done. There's literally not 6 more months on this thing. It is every inch as fabulous as it's gonna get. Dried-blood and Mercurochrome stains the glass. Crisp praline and green banana nose, thick with cherry and syrup, a tangy-rich buttermilk layered in piles of pie-spice and a bit of burn on the nostrils. So now that so many of these wines are hitting the California deep-discount market the story is starting to come out in bits and pieces, none of which I have validated, but it appears as though not only are they newly branded attempt at restructuring Rubissow Wines being sold for pennies, clearly it also includes some of the 10+ year old Rubissow-Sargents, the name someone MY age is very familiar with. I picked this up for about 70% off list, not expecting any miracles, but so far is MORE than paying its keep. That tang pauses for a second in the mouth, letting a drop of ripe cherry woo you for a split second before unleashing its fury. Is the tang the leftovers of the faded fruit? I would say Yes, bit also argue there is STILL plenty of fruit here. It swings back in mid-palate to mingle with dusty eucalyptus, conifer and mint-blackberry decadence before signing off in more faded tanginess and still-green tannin while I pause to worm a chunk of sediment out of my teeth. I am not complaining about this wine one iota. Will I go buy more? Yes, I think I will a couple. I think it's got an easy 5 years on it, and my early-90's cellar-stash is almost gone. A little wifely dust and flower in the nose, rusty hinge and squashed meat-bee fire alongside fish-dock and rubber-band. Instantly you know this old girl ain't done yet. Perfect garnet in the glass, crisp ruby edge and all. Well fruited in the mouth, nothing skanky or gaudy, just calm, still fruit with a slightly bitter background turning up the charm. About where it should be for it's age and origin, this is one of those wines with nothing extravagant and mind-boggling jumping out at you and also not a single flaw. This is a wine which probably hasn't budged much in the past 5 years and probably won't change much in the next 10. Cool, calm, and collected, nothing extravagant, nothing other-worldly, just great, well-made wine.
