when your bae makes you homemade fries,
play league of legends and win,
when you get your paycheck,
when you and your best friend go to boiling crab,
you know you've had a great day.
Echoes of the Mind part 2
Several knocks on his door awoke him from his sleep. "Just a minute!" he sprang up and ran a quick hand through his hair before opening the door. "Your breakfast, Mr. Dawnrunner." the large Norn woman smiled as she offered the tray towards him. "Eggs, sausage, and a glass of milk... is there anything else I can get you?" she canted her head as she asked. "No no, this is wonderful..." he reached into his shorts and pulled out several silver coins and handed it to her. She bowed before leaving and he locked the door as it closed.
He took his time nibbling on his food as he read from his field manual. "I really need to find a more entertaining book to read... theres only so many times I can read about stitching with shoe laces..." He laid the book on his bed and finished his breakfast. "Also, not sure if talking to myself is... healthy." he laughed at that. "I suppose not, but its better than not having anyone to talk to..."
He moved towards the window and pulled out his sketchbook and charcoal. His index finger scratched some of the frost off of the window before he began to draw a lodge he saw in the distance. Ziron never had cared for the arts until he first joined the Seraph. His company commander was a rather dull fellow but had absolutely no problem following orders, and like any good dog who can sit or speak when told, he was rewarded with the chance to lead. He had assigned Ziron the task of scouting ahead or reporting on an enemy encampent... but the good dog simply didn't understand Ziron's reports until he accompanied them with drawings of what he had seen.
Only one other soldier proved to be a better scout than he was; Corpral Maylinn Ashford. She was a tall woman with jet black hair, emerald eyes, and a rough attitude. She was more harpy than human, but he didn't mind. Any time they would go out on patrol together, he always found himself smiling- even if all they did was argue or mock one another. They often sparred with one another, each time one of them lost they would divulge some information about them... and after several months, they nearly knew everything about one another.
Truthfully he had never bested her with a blade but she'd still play along and let him know about her anyways out of pity. "You're never going to get anywhere if you move like that. You call yourself a soldier? You move like an Ettin and strike like a mouse... you'll never beat me if you keep treating your weapon like a club." She smirked. "You need to learn to dance."
He burst into laughter. "Yeah, I'll learn to dance, cook, and even raise some children. I'll make for a lovely housewif-" he was silenced by a swift kick to his gut. "Don't test me... I'm trying to help you. If you want to fight like an Ettin then you should be armed with a damn club or an axe, a sword requires finesse and agility. It focuses on speed and technique instead of brute force. Its like dancing, Dawnrunner, you need grace or you'll just step on all over your partners toes..."
She was smart, tough, and wonderful to be around. He was happy, he craved her company. Each bruise or cut was just a mark of their friendship and he loved learning form her. "You need to stop thinking like a street rat and start thinking like a soldier, otherwise I'll have to keep saving you." He sighed. "Yeah yeah... one day you're going to need me to save you and then I'll get to hold it over your head for the rest of your life." Maylinn laughed "Small chance, Dawnrunner."
One night he awoke to her standing in his tent. Before he could light a candle she was upon him, forcing her hand over his mouth and pinning him to the bed as she whispered into his ear. "Talk around camp is that you favor Eris more than me, is that true?" before he could utter a response she bit his ear. "You belong to me, understand? If I find out you've been rolling in the hay with that two bit whore, you're going to be in a world of hurt..." He couldn't respond, he had no idea what was happening. His heart beat so fast he was worried it would stop.
She was drunk, that was the only reason why she was there. She was drunk and needed someone- anyone to take care of her needs. Or was she? Maybe she wanted him all along and the alcohol made her show her true feelings? He never knew, nor would he find out. She was gone as he woke alone in his cot. He had wondered if it was all just a dream until he felt the claw marks on his back.
When he saw her later the acted as if nothing had happened though she was certainly much more... personal with him. Neither spoke about it, they just kept living together, happy to be in the others company. Maylinn Ashford ended up getting transferred to Eziek's squad for an upcoming push on their a large centaur camp in the Hinterlands. The last time he spoke to Maylinn Ashford was the day his entire life changed. He cradled her in his arms as she smiled up at him, a small river of crimson running from her lips. "You're late... guess I'm going to get home before you after all." she coughed up some blood and laughed. "You look so pathetic right now, I'm dying and you can't even utter a word." she smiled at him as he stared into her eyes. Her emerald eyes shined like starlight as he watched the life slowly drain from her. "You're mine- never forget that. I'll be waiting for you..." she nuzzled against his chest as she took her last breath, smiling. He leaned down and kissed her lifeless lips, tasting the warm blood as he cried.
It was already nightfall in Hoelbrak as he finished her portrait in his sketchbook. She was just as beautiful as he remembered her- a coy smile on her face and a brow raised as if she was about to chide him. "Take care, Maylinn. You better be waiting when Grenth takes me." He signed 'Forever yours' under the portrait before closing his sketchbook and heading downstairs for supper.
