If this had been any other circumstance, any other time in Craig’s life, he might have pushed Peyton off of him, asked what the hell she was doing, insisted that she was not his real mom. However, with his family gone now, he realizes that this is the closest he is going to get to having that ever again.
For a moment, he just stands there, arms at his sides, letting it happen. He allows himself the time to take in the bittersweet feeling of being drawn into the warmth of another person, the worn jacket she’s wearing rough against his dirty cheek. She is not what he really wants, but she is what he has, and his throat goes dry with emotion.
Slowly, he brings his arms around her waist and squeezes her in return, like his mother whenever he got hurt and she finished scolding him for doing something stupid. An embrace both apologetic and grateful. Happy that she hasn’t left him yet, and so sorry that he is a stupid little kid and another mouth to feed and scared. Someday, he wants to not be so scared, and then he can start doing more right by her.
But for the time being, all he can do is squeeze and squeeze and bury his face in her chest.
