The Best of Online Gaming
The Best of Online Gaming
Here’s an interesting fact: the first online game was a text-based multiplayer online game called Multi-User Dungeon. It was the 1970s, and text-based online gaming was on the rise. Hardships of developing a simple MUD
For those of you who don't know what a MUD is... here's a link.
I've started my Lame MUD project at beginning of this year, worked on it for about 2 months and then Mass Effect 3 came out... Skyrim afterwards. Work on the MUD stopped, not so much due to distractions as my reluctance to work with C++ and Boost. Compared to most modern day languages (that have a GC and use and interpreter) C++ has a lot of details that one needs to deal with. Perhaps I'm not used to it yet, but I'm getting there... kind of.
Anyway, I've started working on this project again, in hope it will be done in a couple of months and be somewhat playable. One of the things that burned be out in the beginning was the vague concept of what the game was going to include. Since it's for educational purposes the game play should be very simple and straight forward, but I never put it into writing and thus wanted to implement all the goodies that came to my mind at any given time. Now I know what I'm aiming for and know the basic concepts of the game mechanics things are pretty straight forward. No more wondering what I should design/implement first.
