Steve Rogers - War of the Realms
Earth and palaven, im not as old as you think, age is just a number.
Shepard and I were relaxing in her cabin when this conversation started up.
"god your old Garrus, what happened to your face? those wrinkles?"
"I don't get wrinkles Shepard, human thing, remember?" i replied, half committed to yet another of Shepard's attempts to get under my skin.
"it's all just down hill for you and I, were nothing but old soldiers, veterans, kids wont understand why were so god-damn fucked up in the face. so damn ugly" she said with a huge sarcastic sigh, and drop of her shoulders.
"I took a rocket to the face.. hmm, pretty sure the kids would find that really cool!" i said waving my arms in a 'jazz hands' as humans call it. "what's your story Shepard? why are you so ug-- ...hmm why all the scars?" I asked, returning the attention to her.
"pfft, comes with hanging around someone like you for so long, scars must be contagious" she said with that certain smile I love. "besides, pretty sure my last name is a better attention grabber than rockets to faces" she said in that way that implies I had no argument against it.
I scoffed at that, "well, if you want to be better at getting old, go right ahead, I'll enjoy being under 30 while I still can"
she hit me in the shoulder, then after a moment looked at me sideways "oh yea, your years are a bit longer than ours." she shook her head a little and smiled "funny how we forget things like that. I always think your 35."
"and that would be true if I was from Earth, and yet Palaven keeps me young" I said, slightly gloating at 'aging slower' than Shepard.
"your old Vakarian, older than me, don't you think otherwise"
"by what? a few months?"
then EDI popped into the conversation through the ship, obviously eager to settle this with facts.
"146 earth days, or 3514.7 hours, 16 minutes, 23 seconds as seen on your birth records"
"hah!" Shepard exclaimed "35 hundred hours older than me Garrus, cant escape that"
my mandibles sank a little, pride slightly shaken, "thanks for that EDI"
"my pleasure Garrus" obviously ignoring the sarcasm in my voice "it is interesting, Garrus is older in earth terms, and has been alive for significantly longer than you Shepard--" Shepard smiled that look of victory, while my mandible twitched a bit as EDI said 'significantly' "--but is younger than Shepard in terms of years he has been alive on Palaven"
both Shepard and I looked at each other as we knew EDI was about to divulge information as she loves doing "there are only 365 days between orbital periods on earth that is 8760 hours in a year. Palaven years are 1.2 earth years long. This is 438 earth days, or 10,512 hours in a year. though there are only 371.44 days in a Palaven year do to Palaven's 28.3 hour days."
"you getting somewhere with this EDI? I'm 29 and we--" i said
"your 35" Shepard interrupted.
"you are both correct, so arguing will not determine who is right, though the fact you have been declaring the other one older for the past week is.... interesting. Garrus has been alive longer, but is only 29, Shepard is 33 but is younger"
"were old" Shepard and I said at the same time after a quick look at each other again, so perfect it was almost planned
"That is not for me to judge" EDI said as a final note to her speech.
we sat there on her bed for the next few minutes, Shepard lying her head on me and leaning against me, silent. finally I said softly "no matter how old you get Shepard?, I'll still feel the same about you" she shifted how she was leaning against me and I caught her smile "in this till the end Garrus?" she said after a moment
"till the end"
