Bro has too much free time
“Primavera” In this episode, Will sees Hannibal’s horrifying tribute to him — the heart-shaped "Valentine" made of a man's body. Hannibal doesn’t do casual gifts; he’s like the nightmare version of that friend who overdoes it with grand romantic gestures. “You’re telling me you made a giant heart sculpture out of someone’s ribs? You really shouldn’t have.” Will’s reaction is this mixture of horror and resignation, like he’s half-expecting this by now. But Hannibal’s twisted gesture isn’t just creepy — it’s his way of saying, “I missed you.” Because in Hannibal’s world, nothing says affection like personalized murder art.
The year was 1981. 25 year old Renee Hartevelt was a Dutch student studying with Issei Sagawa (also known as Pang) at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Unbeknownst to anyone, Sagawa was a man with perverse longings. Over time, he gained Hartevelt's trust, then he attempted to kill her. On one attempt the gun misfired while her back was turned. “[It] made me even more hysterical and I knew that I simply had to kill her,” he said. On the very next night he did. The gun fired and Hartevelt was dead. “I thought about calling an ambulance,” he recalled. “But then I thought, ‘Hang on, don’t be stupid. You’ve been dreaming about this for 32 years and now it’s actually happening!" After killing her, he raped her corpse and began cutting her up to eat her flesh.
Sagawa was seen carrying two suitcases to Bois de Boulogne Park, just outside Paris, where he dumped them. The dismembered body of Hartevelt was found inside. Police arrested Sagawa, who openly confessed “I killed her to eat her flesh.” Despite eye witness accounts, evidence found at Sagawa’s apartment, and his confession of the crime, the judge found Sagawa legally insane and unable to stand trial for Hartevelt’s murder. He was deported back to Japan and institutionalized at Matsuzawa Psychiatric hospital in Tokyo, where he was eventually able to checked himself out in 1986.
Sagawa loved his new found celebrity status as a murderous cannibal and profited from it. He has starred in documentaries, appeared on game shows and cooking shows, became a public speaker, published books, appeared in movies (including porn), created artwork, food critic and wrote columns for magazines etc.
Today he remains a free man, but his fame has waned. He lives on his inheritance and fees for interviews. His younger brother, Jun, has been taking care of him since he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage in 2013, and ironically later in life, had a gastrostomy and can no longer eat.
Dracula x Hannibal
It’s heavy on the morning wind, and the ground awash, blood. Dracula could smell it, taste it, there was so much of it. His vision clouded and teeth drew long as his nose locked onto the source. In the field, a crumpled shadow was hoisted atop the antlers of a stag’s head, spearing and impaling the flesh. Steam arose from the alter as Dracula drew closer to inspect the marvel. He could hear a faint pulse, low breathing, and see the blood drip down from the entangled woman’s body.
Dracula was in awe. He fought back the urge to lap up the blood, seeing it pool under the piece. The human had been elevated to art, and Dracula didn’t want to take from the contrast her blood brought to the pale skin and auburn hair of the centerpiece.
A warm flask made its way into Dracula’s hand as he stood there, listening to the drip...drip...drip...drip of the blood with each faint beat. He smiled, and gripped it tightly. “Almost, Hannibal.” he smirked, bringing the flask to his lips. She rolled over his tongue as the sunrise took her final breath. “Exquisite.”
“One can only try their best.” Hannibal spoke, now standing beside Dracula, clean and pristine in a burgundy suit and navy blue tie. He flipped his left wrist and noted the time. “I do have an appointment soon, be sure not to leave any evidence.” Dracula pulled his eyes away from his gift and looked at its creator. “You’re too kind.”
