Chapter 118 spoilers

Starting to strengthen my impression that Magatsumi is a kodoku blade. What I'm curious about now is if my other theory that Enchanted Blades need a sacrifice to finish the process will be correct and if that is correct, does the person who spilled blood on the blade affects its sorcery. That I think might become more clear if we learn Kunishige's type of sorcery if he has any since he's the person who bled out when Enten was created.

I always suspected that what started the war was possibly an aggression from the protagonist's side, and so seeing islander pretty boy's head go fwip at the end there aligns with that, although I'm curious who's casting that sorcery. Also good to know that they had some sort of tribunal about it. It'd be weird if the Seitei War was anything but a mess from start to finish.

I am still curious what changed Chiaki's vision and why there were two visions of the same event. We'll probably gain that insight as we learn more about her sorcery later hopefully.

I finished the season season of Vanitas no Carte (The Case Study of Vanitas) and boy do I have some anime only thoughts. 

I finished season one a little before the season two premiere when it got put on Crunchyroll. I found season two to be as fascinating and at times huh inducing as the first season. It pulled me into the story and endeared the characters to me even more, even Vanitas who I was a bit on the fence about after season one. I’m glad that we got to learn more about the characters this season and how the flashbacks added to the story instead of kind of chopping it up like what can happen in other series. I’m also glad that we haven’t seen everything yet and there is more of the backstory to look forward to unfolding later.

At the end of season one, I noted how weird it was that the spell would lead Noë to kill Vanitas when I’d assumed Noë was going to have to kill Vanitas because Vanitas had turned into a vampire. I wasn’t actually wrong, because this season we learned that Vanitas’ blue mark might just make him lose his humanity eventually, so it’s still possible that Noë might just have to kill Vanitas without the season one spell’s intervention after all. Or perhaps we’ll find that the reason the spell was cast on Noë will be to help him kill Vanitas when the time comes since Noë’s kindness and compassion are his greatest strength and his greatest weakness.

We also got the continuing series-long theme of love leading to danger, no matter which for the love takes. We got Chloe’s story where her love of her companion and his love for her almost killed everyone. Misha tried to exploit Noë’s love for Domi to violate Vanitas’ mind, which was a portion of what Misha’s love for the vampire who saved him pushed him to do to try and uncover the truth he got once he asked like a normal person. It’s one of the more interesting themes to the series I think especially since love is not seen as a punishment, but more like a dangerous weapon. Like for example, Chloe and her companion survived because they loved each other and Domi’s love for Noë saved her from Misha’s manipulations. We also see this theme play out between Vanitas and Jeanne, though we won’t see how that will resolve for a while yet probably.

I’m really enjoying this series and I hope we get to see more of it. I look forward to more seasons.

Black Clover episode 167 reaction and spoilers

Honestly I don’t know why but I really enjoy Vanica. From her off the cuff kidnapping to blowing up all her followers. She’s really something and it’s a nice change of pace after the whole Eye of the Midnight Sun saga.

Knowing manga spoilers, I am lol lol lol at Asta’s devil’s appearance in Asta’s consciousness. I’m curious if this is Asta’s mind projecting what he thinks the devil should look like or Asta’s devil trying to do a great and powerful Oz thing..

You know, putting aside what’s about to happen with Zenon, it’s pretty chilling watching Yami hand the sword off to Asta and Asta deliver the killing blow. At the same time, it’s also underscores how Dante isn’t like the previous antagonists. Dante isn’t a victim, he can’t be reasoned with, and if they don’t take him out, they cannot stop him from threatening all four kingdoms. I really like it. It’s a very big test for Asta’s general political philosophy (trying to find an understanding), and also a test to see if he can really defend his kingdom. Because if Asta isn’t willing to kill when necessary, he won’t make much of a Wizard King.

It also fits with how Yuno vs. Zenon and Noelle vs. Vanica are also tests of who they think they themselves are. Yuno is used to magic coming easily, to being lucky, to having things go his way with some effort but not like knock down drag out effort. Zenon challenges that by killing a good chunk of the Golden Dawn and taking Vangeance hostage. Noelle, meanwhile, has spent her whole life in kind of curse of looking like her mom. Her family abuses her because of it, and while I think she likes the comparisons when positive (like what Mereoleona tells her), it’s also a lot of live up to. Yet, Noelle’s fight with Vanica could have ended in Loropechika’s death, but since Noelle looks like Acier, Loropechika has only been kidnapped. I think that what Yuno’s going to have to do is learn from defeat and what Noelle’s going to have to do is surpass her mom and break free from that comparison. Asta, meanwhile, is facing the realities and consequences of his most driving motivation. It’s all very interesting.

People were not kidding. Zenon just appears and it’s like !!!!! even though I know he’s supposed to show up.

BnHA/MHA chapter 304 reaction and spoilers

One For All brings Midoriya to a room in which everyone but the two users we’ve not seen the faces of sit on extremely high backed chairs. The two users we don’t know are finally not in shadow but stand against the wall like it’s the ending of some Blair Witch Project movie. This probably means that Midoriya might be able to identity these users. The one who has hair like Bakugou’s hair seems to have some kind of equipment on their arms while the ponytail one seems to have a belt of some kind that might be an enhancement. The belt is interesting because the other character we know with a belt enhancement is Aoyama.

As I’ve suspected, One For All and All For One might just be related quirks considering that One For All’s ability to manifest force ghosts is tied to the rapid escalation in Shigaraki’s ability to handle the quirk All For One. So as one grows stronger, the other must grow with it. This also might indicate that to destroy All For One (both quirk and person), they’ll have to destroy One For All too.

I like that Shinomori is barefoot. I wonder if that enhances his ability to use Danger Sense kind of like how Mamoru putting his hand on the ground in Sailor Moon enhances his telepathy.

It makes sense that multiple quirks would be too much stress and strain for someone’s body especially if their body isn’t meant to have those quirks. What probably helped Yagi become the longest holder of One For All was the fact he couldn’t activate the other quirks.

Flipped the page and it seems that by not having his own personal quirk to deal with on top of One For All that might be what allowed Yagi to hold it for so long. I would think this also strengthens the fan theory that Shigaraki is also quirkless since that would increase AFO’s chance of success in transferring to him.

The first user says, “For forty years, Yagi maintained his grip on All For One,” so if Yagi received his quirk at say 15 like Midoriya did, then the youngest Yagi must be right now is about 56 since he transferred the quirk last year, which makes him about as old as I thought he was tbh.

Nana ends the chapter by asking Midoriya, “…can you kill Tomura Shigaraki?” which is an interesting question. Normally in such situations, the question is “will you” not “can you.” There’s also that door we saw behind the chairs flanked by the unknown silent users. That door, I would bet money on, leads to the consciousness of All For One where Shigaraki’s consciousness is trapped while AFO commandeers his body. I mean I know that’s partially wishful thinking on my part because I want to see Midoriya and Shigaraki force ghost at some point, but perhaps the way Midoriya gets to that door is because he wants to save Shigaraki (as previously stated) and not kill him. If so, this would also feed into the promise at the start of the series about how this is about how Midoriya becomes the “greatest hero,” which would mean Midoriya breaking away from Billboard hero type thinking and save villains not just civilians. That’s at least my hope.

BnHA/MHA manga spoilers

Woke up realizing another potentially illegal part of the put Gigantomachia to sleep scheme is the possibility that the kids are actually being used legally in these raids as long as they’re kept to certain sectors of the battlefield. 

So, now my thoughts on why Midnight said that the putting to sleep plan is illegal is:

Because someone other than Midnight is administering her sedative quirk, that breaks some statutes 

Because it’s illegal to administer a non-diluted sedative that isn’t your quirk unless you’re a medical professional who knows what they’re doing

Because the kids, as provisional license holders, are supposed to stick to support roles (which is why Endeavor sent the Wonder Trio with Burnin’ to do rescue stuff) and aren’t allowed in direct combat unless it’s self defense (which might also explain why Midnight said the students had somehow consented to being part of such raids, maybe legally they did by signing up for a hero academy in the first place)

Because the kids are actually going to kill Gigantomachia (though if so I don’t think the kids know they’re going to give Gigantomachia a potentially lethal dose of sedative if this is the case (except maybe Momo since she analyzed the sedative to recreate it))

There are probably some other reasons that haven’t occurred to me yet. I’m thinking the questionable quirk usage and provisional license holders having battle restrictions is probably most likely since usually students are second or third years when they receive their provisional licenses so it’d be rationalized as they’re going to be in the field sooner than later. It wouldn’t surprise me if on average the typical youngest provisional license holder is 17 since they might not succeed the first time they try and the first term of second year is probably geared towards prepping them for the provisional exam.

BnHA/MHA chapter 278 reaction and spoilers

I love how Gigantomachia is just taxi servicing everyone to Shigaraki. Also I’m glad Spinner has returned from wherever he’s been this whole time. Kind of torn though because I wanted to see Himeko lose her shit, but I’m also glad she didn’t because she might have gotten in over her head. Will be fun to see her go off later.

I mean they keep calling this a war arc, so I’m hoping there’s more than just these raids to come, though at the same time I wouldn’t want too much war arc, you know? Happy medium war arc. Enough devastation to catapult Midoriya forward without getting to the point it’s bogging the narrative down.

Interesting. Midnight says to Momo, “Since Brute force wont’ stop him [Gigantomachia], put him to sleep. … You’ll be breaking the law, sure, but the situation’s desperate!” and then Midnight goes on to say, Get the sedative to the heroes and then get outta there! If things look dicey, save yourselves!!" Now I know this probably means they’ve got some kind of back up supply of Midnight’s sweat so of course they don’t want to get caught up in it or they’ll fall asleep too, but it’s the illegal factor to it that raises some questions. The verb in the raw is 眠らす(nemurasu), which can mean both literally sleep but also can be a colloquialism for killing according to Jisho, much like the phrase “Put him to sleep” can mean either thing in English as well. So is this illegal since a) the kids are actually going to kill Gigantomachia or b) because they’re going to use Midnight’s quirk in an unauthorized manner, or c) a bit of both? Like depending on how much of Midnight’s quirk you’re exposed to maybe you really could end up fall asleep and dying like if you are exposed to too much anesthesia.

So, say the kids are possibly about to kill Gigantomachia. We know from Hawks losing his feathers and Miruko getting carved up that a hero killing with intent will have a boomerang karma-type effect. Which brings up the next question: Will Midnight be the one to receive the effect since she’s the one making the call here or will the kids who carry out the deed receive the effect? Will it be split? Should be interesting (and maybe difficult) to see this potential aspect play out if they’re successful.
