THE FOUR CITIES: four cities in the northern islands of the world. They were called Fálias, Findias [whiteness, brilliance], Gorias [heat] and Murias [abundance, muddiness]. In Fálias was a cold, hard stone that gave out shrieking cries. In Findias was a sword that conquered all adversaries. In Gorias was a flaming spear and in Murias was a cauldron of endless abundance and festivity. In each city was a druidical poet. Morfesa [greatly wise] was in Fálias; Uiscias [wateriness] was in Findias; Esras was in Gorias and Semias [dissemination, seeding] was in Murias. It was in these four cities that the Túatha Dé Danann were said to have learnt their magical arts and druidry (*dru-widjā-ag-tā-) [certain knowledge]. In Celtic languages, the native words for ‘town’ and ‘city’ often derive from earlier words denoting ‘enclosure’. The northern islands of the world may simply be a poetic term for the archipelago of islands that include Ireland and Britain.
