Before the FDR Drive and East River Park A very rare view of the east side of Manhattan in 1937, looking north from Delancey Street at what is today's East River Park and the FDR Drive. The photo shows the city's waterfront in the midst of a transformation, with 1.5 miles of piers, warehouses, and docks demolished to build the new park on landfill, creating the largest open green space on the Lower East Side.
