A/N: This was actually just going to be on AO3 but I liked it enough that I wanted to post it here. I do have some other stories (some for my other blogshamefulcrisisshameful) to post, and, hopefully, I can post all of that while I work on my math homework.... Hopefully...*cringes* Also, this thing completely derailed from what I had originally planned for it, but, eh - like I said, I liked it enough to post it here. x’D Enjoy!
The sudden flash of lightning was what woke her up from her sleep. The girl sat up slowly, eyes blinking as she turned her head, trying to get a good look at her surroundings in her sleep-muddled brain. The clap of thunder startled her into wakefulness and she clutched her blankets tightly in her fists, whipping her head to the window and seeing the patter of the rain hit the glass. She shivered, her body finally reacting to the coldness in her room. Another clap and a small whimper left her lips as she pulled the blanket over her head. Not like it did anything, however. Yuki will admit that she should have gotten over this fear of the storms—she was in middle school for crying out loud, she shouldn't be fearful of the harsh rain, and the bright flashes of lightning, or, or, the very, very loud booms of thunder.
Another thunderclap and another whimper left her....
...Okay, maybe she could fear the thunderclaps, they were loud after all. Peeking out from under her covers, she took a quick glance at her door. M-maybe...maybe Onee-chan might be awake...? No, she thought, shaking her head and burying herself under the sheets once more, deciding to just lie back down and force herself to sleep. It wouldn't do well to bother Onee-chan with this. I-I should be fine. N-nothing to worry about, it is just a storm, after all. It'll pass. Nothing to worry about...
She heard something creak and she bit back a whimper, rolling over onto her stomach and burying her head deep into her pillow, hoping that whatever made that noise would go away, or, at the very least, not exist.
"...Yuki?"
Yuki slowly lifted her head up, peering under the sheets once more at the door. Her sister was standing at her door, clearly awake and giving her a confused glance. She swallowed, the fear from the storm disappearing slowly at seeing her sister. She gave a weak smile, but yelped quietly at the flash of lightning that passed through, lighting up her room; she duck back under her covers and grabbed her pillow, covering her face with it as well as folding the ends to cover her ears. It didn't really do much but stifle the noise of the following thunderclap, but at least it wasn't as loud as the previous ones.
"C'mon, Yuki..."
"I'm fine," she responded, wincing a little at her muffled, meek, and fearful tone of voice. Her sister had sounded exasperated and...she thought she heard sympathy in that tone, too. Sh-she didn't need that... She doesn't think she needed it.
"Yuki, you're not. You never hide under your blankets like this unless it was, y'know, a storm," her sister said and the purple-haired girl didn't respond, continuing to just stay under her blankets, hiding herself where she was safe and warm and didn't have to worry about the big, loud claps of—
BOOM!
Her yelp was muffled by the pillow and she faintly heard a grunt coming from her sister. She was definitely worrying about the big, loud claps of thunder now. Her pillow had forsaken her on muffling the sound. But did provide great protection amongst other things.
"Alright, fine..." She heard her sister grumble and she felt fear grip at her. Sh-she didn't want Onee-chan to leave, but, at the same time, she wanted to prove that she was fine handling all of this-this....whatever this is, on her own. B-but Onee-chan brought safety and security with her wherever she went, and Yuki had always went to her whenever she wasn't having a good night, or when a storm like now was happening. She gripped the pillow tighter and tried to bury her face further into the softness of it. J-just try and fight it, Yuki, she willed, just try and fight it.
"Guess we're doin' this the hard way."
Wait, what?
Yuki was about to take her face out of the pillow, but she only held onto it even tighter when she felt something on her bed, causing it to shift with the extra weight. She was about to force herself up, but strong, comforting, familiar arms wrapped themselves around her waist and brought her up. She was still holding on to her pillow, and her blanket was still wrapped around her, but at least she was able to clutch her pillow to her chest and not her face; her blanket wasn't covering her head, so she could clearly see Onee-chan's face. Green eyes were glowing with determination and a protectiveness she had grown used to seeing, and a frown was on her lips, though she wasn't sure what the frown could mean. She wanted to ask where it was that her sister was taking her, but decided against it; another thunderclap sounded, even through the walls of their house and she was more tuned to try and hide from the claps than ask her sister anything. The walk to wherever it was Onee-chan was taking her wasn't long, in fact, they entered into the blonde's room and Onee-chan gently placed Yuki on her bed.
Yuki blinked, clutching her pillow against her chest even more as she shot her sister a confused look. Onee-chan responded with a comforting grin as she straightened and turned, walking to the door and closing it, but not all the way; she left a small crack to be open and for that, Yuki was slightly relieved. The young girl followed her older sister's movements, watching as the older girl went to her closet and opened it up, digging through it and grumbling under her breath. She wondered what it could be that the blonde was searching for, growing ever curious when Onee-chan's cursing got louder, but not loud enough to wake up their parents. Another flash of lightning and Yuki tensed, raising her pillow and burying her face in it just as another clap of thunder erupted. The wind outside was easier to hear, howling and roaring, and the rain was pattering even harder against the window. This storm seemed fiercer than all the others and the young girl could only pray and hope it went away. And hopefully soon.
"Found 'em!"
She started in surprise, lifting her head up to stare at her sister as she turned, kicked her closet door closed gently, and walked over to the bed, carrying a few, thick blankets and some pillows. Even with those many objects in her arms, Onee-chan's grin and green eyes could still be seen, glowing with a cheerfulness that made the fear Yuki was feeling go away. Slowly, but it was still leaving her body. She watched as Onee-chan placed the blankets and pillows on the bed, then turned to her, green eyes glittering even in the dark of the room.
"Hey, Yuki," the blonde said softly, her grin turning to a gentle smile.
"Yes?" she responded, resting her chin on her pillow and staring up at her sister, puzzled.
"Remember when we were little, and you always had nightmares?"
"Y-yeah...?"
"And remember how you'd always come into my room and begged to sleep by me to get rid of those nightmares?"
Yuki childishly pouted at the older girl, but she nodded nonetheless.
"And how we made blanket forts?"
Now she could see where her sister was going with this. Her pout turned into a happy smile and she straightened up, feeling excitement shimmer through her. It was always a thing between the two of them that they did, that when Yuki had really bad nightmares, Onee-chan would always make blanket forts for her and they would just lay inside them, either talking or Yuki listening to Onee-chan read her a few stories. It always managed to calm her down, whether it was from nightmares or from stormy nights like tonight.
"Are we...?" And the big grin on Onee-chan's face made her grin and she quickly got up. The thought of the storm outside was still at the back of her mind, but the prospect of making a blanket fort took away all the fear she had of the storm. The two siblings immediately began building their fort, making sure to keep quiet as to not to disturb their parents. They had fun making the fort and, by the time they were done, the siblings were trying to keep their laughter stifled and muffled from all of the tickling and horsing around they did. Yuki, being slightly childish and more or less driven by the giddiness of doing something like this with her sister after a long while, was about to dive into the fort when a comforting hand found its way on her shoulder. She looked over and saw Onee-chan giving her an amused look; she blushed and looked down.
Onee-chan chuckled and walked over to the bed, grabbing Yuki's forgotten blanket and pillow and then crawling into the fort. "Can't forget the stuff that's gonna keep us warm," she said over her shoulder and Yuki smiled. She followed after the older girl and the two settled themselves on top of the thick blanket they put on the ground to makes themselves even more comfortable. Before the purple-haired girl could lower her head on one of the pillows, Onee-chan swiftly placed the pillow she brought with her under her head and then immediately threw Yuki's blanket over her.
"Onee-chan!" she whispered-yelled, trying to hold back her giggling as she felt familiar hands among the blanket and begin tickling her sides. She tired to swat the hands away and the chuckling above from her sister told her that her efforts were fruitless. "Mou... Onee-chan...!" She successfully pushed her sister off of her and grabbed her blanket, wrapping it around herself and throwing her sister a short, mocking glare, making sure she was wrapped up in the sheets and away from attacking hands.
Onee-chan was grinning widely, hands raised beside her head and fingers flexing; she was kneeling on top of the blanket and her green eyes were sparking with mischief. She stuck her tongue out childishly at the older girl and Onee-chan finally let up, her hands lowering down and a few chuckles leaving her. Yuki let out small giggles herself and it didn't take long for the two of them to be laughing softly at their childish antics. A thunderclap sounded, loudly (probably the loudest yet), but Yuki paid it no mind. She felt content, safe, right here with her older sister giving her the protection she needed. But now she was feeling rightfully tired and she was thankful that there was no school tomorrow; she doubted that she could make it school with the little sleep she was going to get tonight, what from the fear the first half of the night to the happiness and excitement the second half. It seemed Onee-chan could tell she was tired, since the blonde's grin turned soft and the older girl raised a hand and placed it on her head.
"Someone's tired, eh," she said, green eyes glowing with amusement and the kindness that Yuki associated with all big sisters. Yuki nodded, feeling drowsy and wanting nothing more than to rest her head on her pillow. "Well, we've had a rough night, so let's get some sleep, alright?"
"Mhm," she hummed, already lowering herself down and resting her head on the pillow.
"Hey, maybe tomorrow we can go out and get some ice cream?"
"Yeah," she mumbled, snuggling into the pillow and feeling sleep claps itself around her. "That sounds great."
A chuckle and another pat on her head and she was out like a light, with the sense of comfort and security flowing through her.
No more storms were going to wake her up, not with her big sister around.

After thirteen hours of painful contractions, a loud cry interrupts all the noise coming from the midwives and the obstetrician, and Maki finally lets her head fall back against the big pillow behind her, deeply heaving a sigh of relief.
Finally.
"God." Nico sniffes, tightly squeezing her wife's moist hand, her crimson eyes shining because of the tears. She looks at the obstetrician, who gets up with a small and crying newborn in his hands, immediately placing the baby girl against Maki's chest. "Maki-chan ... Ou-our daughter is here ..."
"Yazawa-san, do you want to cut the umbilical cord?" A midwife gently asks.
"Yes, of course!"
And while doing so, another midwife gasps, "Wow, impressive Yazawa-san. You're the first today who cuts the umbilical cord without fainting."
"GIVE ME MY BABY BACK!" Maki suddenly yells, startling everyone in the room. "I WANT MY BABY BACK!" She says, trying to get up, while the midwife who has just taken the baby freezes, scared by such outburst.
The obstetrician rushes to Maki's side, pushing her back on the bed with two of his co-workers' help. "Nishikino-san, I know you want to stay with your baby and it's normal because you're now a young mother, but we have to bathe your daughter and measure her and all. Please Nishikino-san, understand. We have to make sure she's alright, and ... And you still have work to do, like delivering the placenta now. Do you still have contractions?"
Maki wordlessly nods, glances at her raven haired wife and immediately takes her hand in hers ; Nico plants a soft kiss on her sweaty forehead and wipes away some tears -Maki didn't even notice she started crying. The redhead then winces and tries to catch her breath, as she starts feeling the contractions once more : when the obstetrician gave her her daughter, it was as if all the pain vanished away. But now they're back, and it's for the last thing : the delivery of the placenta.
Alright Maki, you're going to do it-
"Um ... ... Doctor ... ?"
You're going to deliver the placenta and then they'll give you your daughter back ... Perfect. ... ... ... I want my daughter so bad.
"Doctor ... There's another baby."
Maki's amethyst eyes suddenly widen, just like Nico's crimson ones. "WHAT?!"
"Excuse me?" The obstetrician says, though a little bit less shocked than the two parents.
"There's another baby." The midwife calmly repeats. "I can already see the head."
"You never said I was pregnant with twins!" Maki gasps, looking at the man who's now next to the midwife, herself placed between Maki's legs, ready to greet the second baby.
"But Nishikino-san, just one more push and the baby is here. You can't stop now. One more push!" The midwife insists, nodding once.
"You should have known that we were going to have twins!" Maki glares at the obstetrician, accusingly pointing at him. "You should have known, dammit!"
"M-Maki-chan, it's fine." Nico sighs, sliding her free hand through Maki's red hair. "Sometimes it happens-"
"Nishikino-san, I apologize-"
"But it doesn't have to happen nowadays, Nico-chan!" Maki frowns. "And ... And we bought enough for a baby, not for two!"
"Nishikino-san, can you push please?"
"I know honey, I know, but we can scheme, like some clothes are going to be for the second baby and-"
"We don't even have another name, Nico-chan! And we don't even know if it's a boy or a girl!"
"You're going to know it, just please push Nishikino-"
"What if it's a boy?" Maki ignores the midwife, still looking at the petite woman, worry plastered all over her face. "We won't give him girly clothes!"
"Maki-chan, when you'll be resting, I'll go buy new clothes, don't worry about it." Nico reassures her with a smile and a peck on the tip of her nose.
"Nishikino-san, please, push-"
"But you have to stay with me! And with our babies!"
Nico rolls her red eyes. "Then, I'll ask Nozomi or Eli or Tsubasa or Kotori or someone else to go buy things for our second baby."
"GODDAMMIT PUSH!"
"BUT I'M PUSHING AND I'M GOING TO PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE IF YOU KEEP YELLING AT ME!"
- 05:09 -
For the second time today, and within few minutes, another loud cry echoes in the room. And another baby is placed against Maki's chest, who heaves a sigh of relief.
"Don't tell me I have a third one waiting for me to push again, or I'm going to kill you all." Maki lightly growls, while Nico laughs as she cuts the umbilical cord, before gulping when she hears the next words escaping her lover's mouth, "And especially you, Nico-chan."
"No, don't worry about it Nishikino-san. It's really over this time." The obstetrician chuckles, before apologetically smiling at the midwife who receives a dead glare from Maki when she takes her second baby away.
- 05:15 -
"Congratulations." The obstetrician offers the new parents a smile as he steps in the labor room again, followed by two of his co-workers that are holding the two sleeping twins. "You have two healthy baby girls, despite the premature labour. Good job Nishikino-san, Yazawa-san."
"Thank you." Nico smiles as she gently takes one of the newborn babies, while the other is given to Maki, who has a loving smile on her face.
The petite crimson eyed woman lightly craddles the baby girl, lulling her with a whispered song. On the other hand, Maki gives her daughter her first breast feed. The other, who fell asleep in Nico's warm embrace, wakes up minutes after against her redhead mother, ready to receive her first breast feed too.
Then, the obstetrician and a midwife lead them to Maki's room, where two small beds await them. But once Maki's gurney is placed between her daughters' ones and that the man and the woman has just left the room, Maki weakly pokes Nico's waist.
"Maki-chan?"
"I know people don't really like it, but ... I want them to sleep together tonight." Maki breathes, glancing at the baby still glued to her breast, her little fingers tightly clutching the wide and loose collar of the dress the doctors gave her before going to the labor room. "She's so small, I feel like ... Like she needs her sister for now."
"It's fine Maki-chan. We don't care about what people think ... If we want them to share their first night together, then we'll put them in the same bed. It won't kill them, and we already know that they're going to sleep together more than once."
Maki smiles and places her head better against the pillow, closing her amethyst eyes. "I'm so happy ..."
"Me too." Nico whispers, while the baby she is craddling sleeps, her small fingers wrapped around Nico's pinky one.
"Nico-chan ... I love you."
"Oh." Nico tenderly smiles and they both share a light kiss. She's not really used to this Maki, even after years being together, but she's also in love with the tired Maki who doesn't have the time -and the energy- to argue with her or be flustered because she said these sweet words out loud. "I love you too."
Nico then places her first daughter in the small bed, immediately covering her with what the midwives gave them. "You did a wonderful job Maki-chan."
"Mm ..." Maki sleepily hums, not even moving when Nico takes the other baby girl to slide her under the cover, next to her twin sister.
Nico quietly leaves the room, not wanting to wake her exhausted wife up, nor her two daughters, that are peacefully sleeping against each other, their small bed right next to Maki's.
She walks towards the waiting room, a happy smile dancing on her pink lips, her steps light and her heart tightening because -and even thanks to- the happiness which is overwhelming her right now. She's pretty sure that her smile matches the ones all of her friends were wearing the day they had their own children. After all, Nico remembers them all : Rin's exhausted but excited smile and Hanayo's beautiful one when they had Junko ; Tsubasa had a sweet one while Honoka tried to hold back her happiness not to wake Aoi up, because she was peacefully sleeping her arms -and it happened twice, when they had Hana last year- ; Kotori's soft and warm smile and Umi's dreamy one when Yuuki joined their family -and Nico swears she never saw such smile illuminated Umi's face- ; Eli's caring one and Nozomi's motherly one, the first smiles Hotaru saw when she opened her turquoise eyes for the first time ; and, finally, Erena's tender one and Anju's loving but reassured one, because they were now able to hold their healthy little Haruka after Anju's first -and last- rough miscarriage.
When Nico enters the waiting room, she finds herself almost pushed to the ground by an excited Rin, despite the early hour.
"Tell us Nico-chan nya, tell us!" Rin bounces on her feet, shaking Nico's shoulder.
Usually, Nico would have told her to stop moving her like that, but the crimson eyed woman is so happy right now that she even laughs along with Rin.
"Nicocchi is so happy." Nozomi smiles, her tone as sweet as her smile, her young eighteen-month-old blonde baby soundly sleeping against her. "It's so good to see you like that, you know Nicocchi."
"Where Auntie Maki?" Junko sleepily asks, yawning and rubbing her purple eyes, placing her head above Hanayo's chest once again.
"Auntie Maki is very tired now, baby." Hanayo says, her hand running through light orange locks, making the almost three years old close her eyes -well, almost, she will have three years old in four months.
"Nico-chan, tell us!" Honoka's excited voice rises, while Kotori lightly giggles at Nico's intrigued gaze. She raises her hand and shows her the mobile phone ; of course Umi and her called Honoka when they learnt that Maki's water broke, because Honoka is currently spending her weekend at Tsubasa's parents' place with her two daughters. This is when Nico also notices that Kotori and Umi let little Yuuki at home or, certainly, with Kotori's mother ; they decided not to bring their eighteen-month-old baby to the Nishikino hospital -yes, eighteen-month-old baby too, just like Hotaru, but Yuuki is older ; the two are nineteen days apart, Yuuki being born on March, the second, and so, Hotaru, the twenty-first.
Only Junko, Hotaru and the little Haruka -who is currently fighting off sleep on Anju's lap- are here, the latter being sixteen-month-old. Nico smiles ; for now, her babies are the youngest. It won't eternally last, because she heard last time that Nozomi wanted to have another baby soon. Maybe another little girl that her twins will want to protect like a little sister.
"How is your baby girl, Nico-chan?" Kotori softly asks, getting up to approach Nico with her mobile phone, so that Honoka can hear her.
"Guys, you'll never believe this!" Nico excitedly says, her smile growing even wider. "They're two!"
"What?" Most of her friends' eyes widen, with pure shock.
"Maki-chan gave birth to two little girls~" The new mother squeals with joy, happily hugging Kotori and Rin, the two that were right beside her. "I suppose they didn't see the second baby during the ultrasounds because she's a little bit smaller than the first and she seems weaker, but- b-but they're here, and they're just so pretty and- oh my God, I already love them so much!"
"This is so cool~" Kotori happily hugs Nico back. "Anju-chan and I will sew new clothes for your other little girl!"
"Totally!" Anju smiles, gently placing her baby girl in Erena's arms before standing, cracking her back. "Congratulations Nico-chan, Maki-chan and you did a great job." She giggles.
Soon enough, Nico finds herself being hugged by almost everyone, Nozomi even pecking her forehead with a 'I'm really proud of you Nicocchi, you're a real big girl now~'.
"How did you call your twins so?~" Honoka asks through Kotori's phone.
"Kamiko and Makoto." Nico beams, staying in Rin's embrace.
I'm sorry Nina, I don't know if you planned this but I allowed myself to say that Anju had a miscarriage before having Haruka, bc I loved writing the fic where she went through it :’) And that NicoMaki didn’t know they were going to have twins hehe
I hope you all enjoyed it! See you for another episode of 'Good Memories' :*
