Here’s a ‘little’ headcanon for Junko under the cut.
Junko is the personification of her own grudge and wrath, and it can easily be considered her life force. If somehow she lost the will to hold onto her grudge, she would cease to exist. The spirit’s heart is the most damaged by this. With the betrayal of her husband and the murder of her only son, her heart was shattered, and so was her soul. Left alone to wallow in her own negativity, not only was her mind corrupted with thoughts of revenge, but to glue together the broken pieces, she allowed it to take control of her very soul.
Around the time when she first met Hecatia, which wasn’t long after her transformation, she was practically an empty shell, only coming to life when fits of anger overtook her. Over the years (with some help from the hell goddess), she managed to not only control her violent outbursts, but also begin to show emotion again. She can express things like anger or sorrow very easily, but things joy or love became very foreign to her. Keeping on this track of thought, it also explains why she’s so guarded with her emotions as well. If someone tries to show kindness to her, she would seem stiff and cold, or if someone tried to make any advances towards her, she would instantly chide them for it. If you can get past this barrier she’s surrounded by, you’ll see she can be just as kind.
On the subject of happiness, it’s like a double-edged sword for her. While being happy makes her feel better, it also is slowly hurting her. Such things as friends, familial bonds, or even a relationship, as much as she needs and desires them, is essentially killing her. These things are all associated with love and joy, and being a recipient of these feelings is helping to heal her soul, but at the same time it’s pushing out the negative energy that’s fueling her.
Now taking a side-track for a moment, I want to point out Junko’s tails. They’re made of energy, yet we have no idea why they’re there. These tails are actually a physical representation of her grudge, her life force. While they can be touched, they cannot actually be harmed; this links to her ‘temporary immortality’ as long as her grudge holds. They can be temporarily gained (like if she loses control of herself during an outburst or is in a battle), but just like a person’s life, they can be lost.
Pulling two-and-two together; if Junko is slowly losing her grip on her grudge and in a sense ‘killing herself’, it would show through her tails. Once all of the tails have diminished, it will signify that her negativity has been cleansed, and without it, her life finally comes to an end.
Here’s a small bonus too, atleast pertaining to my muse’s current ‘status’. Given her current relationship with Reisen (in one verse), and her growing familial bond with Hecatia and Clownpiece, she’s already lost 2 of her 7 tails, now leaving her with 5 left.
A funny thing about that number (which also somewhat inspired me to write this in the first place), is that in the 7 Deadly Sins, Wrath is usually placed in 5th on most listings. Wrath is related to anger and fury, so Junko’s essentially a living personification of her wrath, and therefore having 5 tails best represents her grudge.
