Today I was thinking in my #sketchbook of how we're the #librarians and #museumcurator of our #minds ... and we're the #explorers too. One of my favorite #books about #creativity for any skill level is "How to be an explorer of the world" by Keri Smith. Opt for one, and create a relief; color will also assume dimension. Then take the volume and develop it in space, demonstrate that the concept painting-relief-sculpture is obsolete, exhausted,that form-color is one within relative spaces”…….Manuel Felguerez Manuel Felguerez was born in 1928 in Zacatecas, Mexico. He moved to Mexico City to study sculpture at the Academia de San Carlos and La Esmeralda School of Art. He began exhibiting in the early 1950’s in Paris and Mexico City and continues to exhibit worldwide today. Felguerez has taught for many years at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and was also a visiting professor at Cornell University. In 1976, he was Visiting Researcher at Harvard University, where he collaborated with other scholars on the use of computers in design. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim grant. Entre dos almas is typical of many of Felguerez’s paintings from the early 1990’s in which he explores composition in two dimensions. His paintings include lyrical explorations of curved organic forms juxtaposed with geometric elements. The cool metallic gray background of this work is reminiscent of the high technology and computer elements which influenced Felguerez’s work in the late 1970’s. Felguerez’s paintings are closely related to many of his sculptural reliefs. Sisterhood explores the artist’s interest in early feminist literature. Her new series of portrait/landscape paintings and installations examines the theme of relationships and raises questions about identity, the self and takes as a starting point the Pre-Raphaelist Brotherhood (PRB). The group, funded in 1848 –the same year taken place the most widespread revolutionary wave in European history- called itself a reform movement intended to restore the spiritual integrity of arts and society. In this crusade, mythical female characters appear as the ideal subject matter. Surrounded always by intricate intriguing landscapes and decorative elements alluding to the Classical era, these beautiful women emerge overpowered by an aura of lassitude and self-effacement that echoes the so extended “safely dead” image identified with femininity at the epoch. Employing a wide range of media, such as photography and painting, assembling these with fabrics, buttons, jewelry, porcelain, and resin on wood, Surel’s multifacetedwork asks us to look within, to investigate and challenge our views of ourselves, the various roles or characters we play.
