Imperfect Heroes

One of my personal heroes as a musician is my former Voice Teacher from college.  The man had his Master’s Degree in the subject and he could sight-read almost anything put before him (despite only first learning the piano when he was in High School), as well as compose music.  Basically, he was extremely well-rounded and inspired me to achieve the same level of skills.  However, today, I learned that our heroes are human.

Whilst I was playing through my copy of Disney’s vocal selections for The Hunchback of Notre Dame--since one of the songs I learned in my lessons was “Out There”--I discovered that my teacher had made a simple mistake (though some Type-A perfectionist might otherwise have shamed him for it!): During my lessons we were playing through some of the music from this show when he commented that (yes, the sheet music was in front of him!) whomever was singing this piece must have have the piece manipulated by the recording equipment because it was an impossibly high “C”!  However, as I was playing through the music I realized (as you an see): That’s not a C!  It’s a D!

Granted, it’s only a simple mistake, but it reinforces the view that our heroes are human and prone to mistakes.  And that’s okay.  Like them, we are also human and will make mistakes, no matter how well intended we may try to perfect our musical skills.  This should not diminish our respect for them.  Rather, it should allow us to reevaluate our respect for our heroes, particularly if we or others are overly pressuring ourselves to excellence.

I comfort myself that “at least I’m not this person”. It’s pretty shallow really, but I’m obsessed with bad singers, it gives a reason to feel superior...but not really ever put myself out there with my own music.
