Today In History David Eli Ruffin, a soul singer who rose to fame as one of the lead singers of the Temptations, was born on this date January 18, 1941, in Whynot, Mississippi. With Ruffin at the helm, the Temptations hit it big with such songs as “My Girl,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Just My Imagination,” “I Can’t Get Next To You,” and “The Way You Do the Things You Do.” His solo career followed with more hits such as “My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me),“ “Walk Away from Love,” "I Lost Everything I’ve Ever Loved,” and “Common Man.” Ruffin’s ability to embody the ecstasy and agony of songs about love gained and lost cast an unbreakable spell on countless admirers who once watched, slack-jawed, as he dazzled crowds. David Ruffin is one of the Greatest Singers of All Time.
