Last night: Before Jaap Van Zweden and the Orchestra performed John Corigliano’s Symphony No. 1, John addressed the audience, pointing out memories of his friends that inspired the musical material found in his piece — from an offstage piano performing a distant tango, to a solo cello voice in the third movement, to the choice to place the brass encircling the Orchestra. Before intermission the Orchestra performed Brahms’s “Tragic Overture” and pianist David Fray elegantly performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24. One more concert of this program left, Sat June 1.
