I’m happy to hear that your hedgehog Stiles is doing well!
Thanks, I was really worried about her. Hibernation is really dangerous for African Pygmy Hedgehogs because they do originate from such a warm climate. While European hedgehogs have developed the ability to hibernate, they're much larger and better-equipped to deal with the strain of hibernation.
African Pygmy Hedgehogs are really tiny, usually weighing between one and two pounds (Stiles is about a pound, maybe a little less), and are better equipped to deal with excessive heat in a process called aestivation—like hibernation, their bodily processes slow down, but that's to avoid heat stroke and overheating, rather than freezing. When it comes to hibernation, their metabolism doesn't slow down enough to be fully effective. Hedgehogs that attempt hibernation usually die within the first 72 hours, sometimes less, of hypothermia or starvation.
Really, really glad that Stiles is okay. She'll be at a higher risk for attempting hibernation a second time, now, but that's okay. I'm better prepared to deal with that now, and I'll be keeping a much closer eye on her.
