文法：〜べからず（Must Not）
Related to べき／べきではない (must/must not), べからず is a grammar leftover from classical Japanese and also carries the meaning of “must not”.
It is a formal phrase, mostly seen written on signs and almost never used in conversation. Using them in spoken speech will make you sound ridiculously old-fashioned.*
Verbs attach to べからず in the plain form, except for する which attaches only with す, just as it does with べき.
見る → 見るべからず → (You) must not look/watch する → すべからず → (You) must not do

(Toyama Castle Grounds sign addressed to the local crows. It scares away crows by attracting (human) visitors’ attention. * It also works as a pun on the words べからず and からす (crows).)
べからざる is a form of べからず that is used exclusively to precede and describe nouns. (verb) + べからざる + (noun) A (noun) you must not/cannot (verb)
Several idiomatic phrases use べからざる including: 許すべからざる罪 → an unforgiveable sin 欠くべからざる物 → absolutely necessary things (= things that cannot be lacking)

None of them knows what to expect from the Lucian capital. Insomnia. The city the sun could never reach. Where Etro, death, is worshiped as the patron of the royal family.
There have been so many rumours about the city and it’s inhabitants. That they do not like strangers, that their skin is so unnaturally pale because it is never touched by the sun. That Insomnians would go blind should they ever see direct daylight.
Nyx does not know which rumours are true, if any at all. But what he knows is that he and his people were taken in and in gratitude he would gladly follow the King’s rallying cry. He would join the Kingsglaive to fight.
So he does. As do many others.
They are trained to exhaustion. Some days Nyx can barely return to the dingy apartment he shares with Libertus, he is so exhausted.
Then, after weeks and months, comes the time where the King will gift them with his magic. He’s a stern man, the King, with lines on his face that are edged in by the frown he always seems to wear.
And finally the moment comes. Nyx kneels and speeks the vow, swears fealty (swears his life and soul to this man). And then the magic cuts into him. Crystal sharp and unforgiving it makes something in him bleed to make space for itself.
It hurts. Oh, how much it hurts. But Nyx bears it. Because this will help him grow stronger, help him fight his enemies and win his home back.
Then, it’s back to training. And it gets even more grueling than before.
They train and they train and they train and then they fight. But not in open battle, no. That is for the Crownsguard. They are the sword people can see coming.
The Glaive however, is the knife in the dark. Death that sneaks up on its victim without it noticing until it’s too late. A swift hunter in the shadows, sharing their territory with the daemons they sneak past, without them noticing.
The King’s daemons they’re also called by some.
And if that is what it takes to get his home back, Nyx doesn’t mind overly much.
