Have you ever read a story that’s meant to be deep and insightful and ‘inspiring’ but all it really manages is to annoy the absolute hell out of you?
Slight rant ahead. (It’s late, and I’ve been musing over this for some time).
Like, I’ll be reading a book, (given, this actually happened years ago) and yeah, the concepts are interesting, the plot intriguing, but then the characters and the mantra just end up settling for some really weak, pithy plot fixes like: “Well of COURSE the good guys WIN EVERY TIME, and NO ONE WHO’S GOOD ACTUALLY GETS HURT. That would just be AWFUL and in REAL LIFE it JUST CAN’T HAPP-”
Nope. Nope. NOPE.
I’m not saying I dislike happy stories. I love ‘em. I love all kinds of happy stories.
But the - I don’t know - the grating thing I found in some published works that supposed to be ‘uplifting’ or ‘inspirational’ or whatever is that even if the ending is happy, what ruins it for me is when the big message of the book comes across as - ‘if you’re good, things will work out JUST FINE, and it’ll all be okay BECAUSE YOU’RE GOOD.’
Pithy. Succinct. But inaccurate.
Because sometimes, the good, kind, smart people get beaten. They lose. They suffer. Sometimes, they end up with scars and trauma and nightmares that don’t go away. It’s awful, it’s humiliating, and it’s not because they ‘didn’t believe enough’ in the righteousness of their cause, or because they ‘lacked the inner fire’ to accomplish their goal. It’s because shit. happens. And sometimes, ugly, evil, awful people win.
Sometimes, evil prevails. But that just ‘doesn’t look good’ in stories so it’s not the kind of thing that the preachy, ‘if you just trust in God enough things will work out’ stories will dare touch with a ten-foot pole.
*fingers clench tighter around a water glass and it shatters*
I have...strong feelings on this subject. I think it’s because my abusive parents who stressed that ‘good girls will never have real issues’ have been on my mind lately. (I’m going to a family get-together in late June where they’ll be present - and honestly I’m keyed up enough where if either one of them even thinks of touching me (tap on shoulder, attempted hug, or whatever) I’m going to a) slap their hand away and b) If they try it again, I’m kicking my father in the nuts and striking my mother across the face. Granted, it sounds extreme, but honestly, it’ll be self-defense.
Anyway, the short version is: I’m tense. I’m mad. And mostly, I really have a short fuse when it comes to the ‘oh well it’ll all work out JUST BE GOOD’ mentality.
Fuck that shit.
Be the best person you can be? Yes. Absolutely. Be kind to other people and to yourself. Learn from the shitstorms you’ve either seen or been in, and use that knowledge to help other people.
For the love of sanity, make sure to keep your sense of humor. Try to laugh at yourself if you walk into a wall. Like, ‘oh. well. I guess the wall moved, lol.’ Be willing to be yourself, and to hell with whatever the gossips say. Look at people for who they are, and for how they treat others. If someone’s a complete and total jackass to the customer service rep at a store, avoid them like the bubonic plague. If you’re waiting in line at the coffee store, go ahead and leave a tip, or even just make sure you give a friendly smile to the barista.
Swear sometimes. Get excited about what you love. Go out with friends. Drink a nice hot cocoa while watching TV. Read that fanfiction you’ve been dying to read, or write your own, or BOTH. Listen to your music. Get lost in your imagination every once in awhile.
But for the love of all you hold dear, don’t let the platitudes drown you.
I am sooooo eepy.
