Summary: AU: A series of vignettes, one short, three long, concerning the aftermath of dropping out of university, rediscovering reading, and falling in love.

Comments: I thought this was going to be a light, fluffy read, and instead I was hit with all of these feelings. Remus was incredibly relatable, the writing was beautiful, and the love of reading was almost tangible; it all combined to impact me in a way that I can’t really describe. I can only say it’s a new all-time favorite, and hope that conveys to you how special it already is to me.

This was his book, the closest to his heart, his favorite. And he had given it to Remus, in the blind hope that it might mean something to him too.

Perhaps that would mean little to someone else; perhaps they would scoff and say, so what, big deal, it’s only a book. But Remus heard the reverence in Sirius’s voice and felt its echo in him; he understood that love, fervent and formless, which beats for a certain set of pages and the world contained in them. And he knew, now more than ever, that there were certain books that were not simply things you held, but things that held you.

I had to read this when I finished the piece @mustntgetmy wrote for @wolfstar-bigbang . I actually loved it even more. I can see so much of the canon Sirius and Remus in this.

It's from Remus's point of view, and basically how they get together. The way the author included the Muggle version of lycanthropy was brilliant.

Highly recommend this one, and follow it with the sequel (A Series of Sketches Done in Black Ink).

My husband came to talk to me while I was in the middle of it. I only just managed to not throw him out because "I'm reading fluffy Wolfstar, damnit!"

#mayfestrecs - Day 27 Fest: RS Fix It Fest

Summary: A re-imagining of the First War, wherein Remus never went to Hogwarts and instead runs a pro-werewolf, alternative paper, and Sirius is a lonely barfly, and they are both wary of starting something serious together while the war is on - but then the war ends.

Comments: I don’t know quite what to say but I loved this entirely. Remus is outspoken; he knows how he feels and what he wants and I felt as enamored with him as Sirius was. The author, in very few, incredibly well-written words, also evokes that revolutionary, rage-filled emotion of the first war. I am definitely adding this to my list of favorites. <3

Of the two fanfics that changed my life, shout out to one I reread today: A Duet by musntgetmy.

The fanfic is set during the first war with Slytherin!Sirius who never became friends with the other marauders. Its absolutely beautiful. First time I read it, I was so scared for the ending that I downloaded and sent it to my sister to make her check if something bad happens, and she doesn't even read fanfic.

How it changed my life: how the author talks about music, and the music they linked to that they were listening to when they wrote this was a revelation.

On re-reading, now that I've internalized the music, I realized the cadences of the story, the word lengths and rhythm matched the music and made it feel like a written example of the music. Absolutely glorious writing.

#curiosityfest - day 16

Author: mustntgetmy Rating: Not Rated Word Count: 11,416

Summary: Non-magic, modern AU wherein Grimmauld Place is still a home to be escaped, Sirius can't trust his own mind, and there are terrible and wonderful things in the woods.

Warnings: This fic has intense and explicit description of gaslighting/parental abuse, plus description of steps towards recovery from said abuse. There is also mention (but not explicit description) of the violent death of an animal, plus a briefly described fight in which a werewolf gets injured. Additional warnings for brief mention of excessive drug use, drinking, and some cursing.

Comments: This was gorgeous and atmospheric. There are dozens of lines I could highlight, as is usual with mustntgetmy’s writing, but I’ll pull out a particular favorite here.

Favorite Quote: 

They were days spent bowed before an afternoon campfire, their worst, most ridiculous ghost stories served alongside the hot chocolate they’d heated over the flames, their hands seeking warmth in each other’s pockets, never mind the nearby flames; days kneeling in the wind blown leaves, Remus showing him which mushrooms to pull and brush from the earth, his voice soft as he named them, softer still as he brushed one, cleaned and dusted with rock salt, past Sirius’s lips; and then days of other gifts passed from palms to lips: chocolate chocolate chip cookies still oven-warm and gooey from the oven Sirius had painstakingly baked them in; a bag of roasted pumpkin seeds, sticky sweet with brown sugar and cinnamon; and a single smooth golden apple, shared, its tartness filling Sirius up like the rush of a drug, so juicy he was compelled, yes compelled, to touch his thumb below Remus’s bottom lip to wipe some away. (Remus’s tongue, brand hot against the pad of his thumb, that alone was not a gift: that was a revelation, an answer to the question of how much heat he could hold, how much wanting he could be filled with. And he had thought he knew how much already; he had thought wrong.)

A Series of Sketches Done in Black Ink (mustntgetmy, finalsoul)

I read this as I was working my way through the @wolfstar-bigbang works. It's a sequel to another fic by @mustntgetmy and I wish I had read that first. This fic is great as a stand alone, and you don't need the first one, but I really want to read it now.

Muggle AU, the story follows most of Remus and Sirius's first year together, from Sirius's point of view. There's plenty of lovely fluff, and plenty of heartbreaking angst, especially with regards to Regulus.

The art by @finalsoul is beautiful, and well worth admiring.

Well, I'm off to read the first installment (Within White Space) and if it's as good as this, I'm sure it'll be my next rec.
